They are full of ****. A new cat is about 500-600 dollars and should take an hour to do so thats another $100. I wouldn't have that shop do it.

Whats wrong with the cat? There was a recall on them,i forgot what year ti's it was for but it was up to 100k miles. Mine was replaced in 03.

If you don't have emissions, just get one of them SuperSprint resonator cat-deletes..

The recall was for '98s only. I also have a CEL in my '96, and have to replace the cat.

I have found them as cheap as $330 on line, and I think I could replace it myself.

Going to the dealer or a Midas type place is going to be >$900.

BMP designs sells it for $330, and you can get a 10% discount if you are a member of the BMWCCA.

if they're replacing it with actual BMW cat, that's actually a good deal. the bmw cat will last a lot longer and work better than some $300 aftermarket cat. you may not even pass emissions with an aftermarket cat, others have found that out. all cats are not equal!

Question: My CEL came on and the dealer said it needed a new Cat (was actually my girlfriend driving it on vacation, he saw $$$$) How can I tell if its actually the Cat or an O2 sensor? 97 Sport

The computer stores the codes for some time. You can still have them read.

stormos; it probably has to do with our emissions standards. Either they can make them less efficient for your market (less costly to manufacture) or simply that the demand is much lower.
