They are full of ****. A new cat is about 500-600 dollars and should take an hour to do so thats another $100. I wouldn't have that shop do it.
Whats wrong with the cat? There was a recall on them,i forgot what year ti's it was for but it was up to 100k miles. Mine was replaced in 03. __________________ 98 Avus Blue 318 ti Active

The recall was for '98s only. I also have a CEL in my '96, and have to replace the cat.
I have found them as cheap as $330 on line, and I think I could replace it myself.

if they're replacing it with actual BMW cat, that's actually a good deal. the bmw cat will last a lot longer and work better than some $300 aftermarket cat. you may not even pass emissions with an aftermarket cat, others have found that out. all cats are not equal! __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles

The computer stores the codes for some time. You can still have them read.
stormos; it probably has to do with our emissions standards. Either they can make them less efficient for your market (less costly to manufacture) or simply that the demand is much lower. __________________
