How can I tell the difference between the sport and the default suspension? I just bought a '95 ti. I know nothing about its history, but it's a good bet that the shocks are still the original ones. I know that the sport version rides a little lower, but I have nothing to compare it to, and after 18 years it's probably sagging anyway. | | | 06-20-2013, 01:42 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Ft Defiance, AZ Posts: 686 | post up a pic of your car, if you've got a sport model you'll have the m tech front bumper and rear valence along with the sport interior or I suppose if you really wanna get into i could pop down the road and look at it __________________ 1999 BMW 318ti 2005 MINI Cooper S | | | 06-20-2013, 02:35 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: SW Florida Posts: 4,275 | The 1995 Sport model looks just like the Active on the outside. It will have Sport interior I believe. Another member has recently (past 6-8 months) described to me the difference between a 1995 Sport and all other year Sports. If the suspension is stock...it's probably shot. __________________ Sean 1995 Active | | | 06-20-2013, 04:02 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: Santa Rosa, CA Posts: 407 | Quote: Originally Posted by teetime4one The 1995 Sport model looks just like the Active on the outside. To OP: You can post the last 7 digits of your VIN in this thread here http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18444 That should let you know what your car has, or at least what it left the factory with. __________________ 1997 318ti 5-speed Moreagrün 1996 318ti auto Hellrot (retired) | | | 06-20-2013, 04:39 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2013 Location: Ithaca, NY, USA Posts: 147 | Yeah, I figured the struts are nearing retirement age. That's why I'm asking, so I can figure out where I'm starting from. I can take pictures tomorrow when it gets light. Just give me some specific places to look at. Coyoteh, thanks for the link. I posted my digits there, we'll see what they come up with. | | | 06-20-2013, 02:14 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Ft Defiance, AZ Posts: 686 | Thats appears to be right, but you've got an LSD, which is pretty rare __________________ 1999 BMW 318ti 2005 MINI Cooper S | | | 06-20-2013, 10:33 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: SW Florida Posts: 4,275 | Our cars are exactly the same. Go aftermarket for the suspension. H&R sport springs. Bilstein sport shocks and struts. that's what I have...love it __________________ Sean 1995 Active | | | 06-20-2013, 11:27 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2013 Location: Ithaca, NY, USA Posts: 147 | How far will the H&R springs drop me? I don't want to go too low. Some of the roads around here are total crap (teen ti can probably confirm that) and this is my only car. | | | 06-21-2013, 01:05 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: SW Florida Posts: 4,275 | __________________ Sean 1995 Active | | | 06-21-2013, 02:03 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Ft Defiance, AZ Posts: 686 | the roads are indeed rather poor up here, although with that said my ti on the stock sport suspension has plenty of clearance for the most part, other than speed bumps so id say with mild confidence that you'd be able to do a slight drop if you wanted to, you'd just have to be mindful of how you're driving __________________ 1999 BMW 318ti 2005 MINI Cooper S | | | 08-18-2013, 11:12 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2013 Location: Ithaca, NY, USA Posts: 147 | Thanks for everyone's advice. I just got done installing H&R Sport springs and Bilsteins. The rear springs were a bit of a bitch, and I had to make a custom tool to tighten the top nut on the front. Everything else went pretty smoothly. I shouldn't have worried about dropping it too low; the old suspension was so wasted that I was already lowered. Both of the rear shocks were blown, and one of the springs was cracked. With the new suspension, I'm only a half inch lower than before. | | | 08-19-2013, 03:19 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: SW Florida Posts: 4,275 | Good to hear it has been taken care of.
