Default Knock Sensor

My 98ti may be in need of a knock sensor, is it a job I can do myself? If so what is involved?

I just pulled this code too.
12-14-1-734-580 $73.25 each through Pelican.
there's another $150.....
I know there are two sensors and one is in the back near the starter.

will require ?
removal of upper intake- new gaskets needed
air mass.....
some vac lines?...
Anyone done this themselves?
Can I swap a starter in when doing this from above?

(good thread hubri!)

well i never change mine, but i remove my intake manifol to install the supercharger and requiere some work, take time, i think is better go to the mechanic., BUT i not 100% sure that you need remove the intake i think if you remove the generator you gain some space( i talk about the sensor in the side of engine, remember the obdII have two)

Is an intake manifold removal a pain? I've alternators, brakes/rotors, and radiators, is this out of my league?

i had my knock sensor replaced....i did tons of research, but there wasnt hardly any information on the net about 318ti m42 knock sensors.... know you have to remove the upper intake manifold on the m42....and upper and lower manifolds on m44...i still dont know exactly where they are...but i wasnt comfortable attacking this task since i didnt know a lot about it and got my local 'european performance' shop to replace it for me.

remember... to remove the two parts of the intake manifold you need to remove the fuel rail, fuel injectors, fuel hoses, wires, alot of pieces, i think is better take the car to the mechanic

Knock sensors are on the back of the engine, directly under the valve cover. They are a royal pain to get to. Take it to a mechanic if you don't want to spend an entire weekend replacing them.

FWIW...I had a knock sensor code last year, cleared it and it hasn't come back. Make sure it's a problem before you replace it.

Yep there a right horible job, if you replace them yourself, make sure you torque them correctly they are very very easy to damage by over tightening.
DustenT's right get a fault code read done see how many times is accurred and if its only logged a few time's and not a present fault. delete it. and have a merry christmas lol

also, replace both of them now because you dont want to replace one and then find out right after you did the pain in the ass job you have to do it again when the other goes out

common sense, i know....but just a quick reminder
