Getting around to changing the oil on my daily beater 318ti. 1995 car, 175k miles. Bought it, seller and reciept indicated a oil change 500 miles ago...so I left it. When I got under the car I noticed that the front main seal was seaping, oil pan was covered with crud, along with the rack, suspension, etc. I drained 7+ quarts out of the car! I'm not 100% sure, but I'd bet that the main seal was weeping because there were 3 something extra quarts of oil, and I'm sure it's not really designed to hold oil back, just keep it from splashing out. I'm hoping I might get a few more MPG out of the car now as well, it's been pretty consistent at 24.. (autotradgic), but I'd think it should do a bit better than that. It is a common leak on the front of these cars. __________________ ... ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ | | | 01-06-2010, 05:57 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | When I bough my Jeep in 1994 , I took it in to the dealer for its first oil change, (Free when I bought the rig) Well, I picked it up and by the time I got out of their lot oil was running all over, I coasted backwards back into their lot and right into a bay. The manager came running over yelling at me to wait in line until he recognized me... I made them put it up on the hoist with me watching, then had them draiin the engine into a bucket. 20 quarts of oil. The oil change monkey was new and thought the numbers were quarts.... They had to pull the engine and replace all the seals, even the valve cover... So free aint necessarily a good deal. I find with my car doing an oil and filter change I should put about .5L less than a full big container of 15/50 mobil1. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
