Default S42 engine

Has anyone heard of someone putting the s42 engine in a ti? I know some people put in the s14 engine, but bmw replaced the e30 m3 engine with this engine for race cars in 1994.

It is a 2 litre coversion of the m42 engine and puts out about 285bhp, not bad for a 4pot! Probably quite difficult to source one though

Yes, it is quite difficult to find one. It was a racing engine and was not available on street cars. It is a great engine, but keep in mind it is a racing engines wich revs to about 8500-9000 rpm and is not very street usable because it produces no power below 5500-6000 RPM. If your looking for a daily driver, this wouldn't be the best choice.

Regards!

Yeah from what I have read it produces max bhp at 8000rpm and max torque at 7000!

But still, a sick naturally aspirated 4pot!

It would definately be a cool engine to have, but as Portugal said, one would be almost impossible to find. it is a race engine, after all.

Yeah, I saw that thread. He had good results. But the engine did not turn out a S42 replica. I came a great engine, but still far from S42 capabilities.
And he his still missing the TBs.

i'm not even too sure, but reading what you guys are saying, it seems like a bad idea in the first place to put one of these in a TI.

Wow that is an awful lot of effort to put into the engine. 300+ bhp is quite sick from just over a 2 litre 4pot.

It a shame they never put the s42 engine into anything but race cars, the s14 was sick in the m3 but tha was the end of the super four pots that bmw built

Again, they did it because it's not a very streetable engine.

As for Gizmo's build, that probably about the best you can do (and for ALOT less money too).

The s14 is a great engine! That throttle response is way better than the inline6 engines. It depends on on your taste, but I just love a high reving 4 cylinder engine!

Pics of the s14 or s42?

I understand that the s42 was not practical for use in non - race cars, but it still suprises me that they did not do something inbetween the m42 and s42, something along the lines of the s14 engine. Its a real shame that they dropped the 4 pots in favor of the 6s

Bottom line, 6 cyl engines are naturally and harmonically balanced, 4 cyl engines are not. Having gotten my lunch money taken on the track numerous times by 2.0 6 cyl vs my prev 2.0 4 cyl ,,, I'd go with the 6... They just last longer.

And in the long run they are cheaper. In most marques.
