Cheaper and lighter in most cases.

I think the real question isn't why BMW loves plastic, it's why does BMW love cheap plastic? I swear, I ripped the door panels off my Subaru to replace the speakers, I was not gentle at all yet I only broke the trim piece that goes around the door handle on one door, do the same thing on a BMW and break half the clips, then cry when you discover that BMW doesn't just sell the individual clips, you have to buy a completely new door panel

actually, bmw is forced to use crappy plastic, just like all other german cars because their forced to use recycled plastic, thats why we get our radiators from behr, they make radiators for bmw of africa, and use virgin plastic instead of recycled, so they last longer
