I have a 96 318ti and am wondering what a good above stock bang for the buck clutch is to get. I have looked and there are alot to choose from but what is a good one. Also, do all 318 ti's run high RPM on the highway, Mine runs about 3500 RPM on the highway at 70ish....whats up with this? | | | 09-24-2008, 01:19 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Richmond Hill, GA Posts: 1,231 | RPMs sounds about right. For the clutch you should go with a sachs kit. really good quality and last a long time, given you dont redline every gear. | | | 09-25-2008, 02:11 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2008 Location: Peoria, IL Posts: 256 | I recently bought the sachs clutch but haven't installed it yet. All m44 engines have a dual mass flywheel standard. This includes 318's and Z3's that are 1.9L M44's. No comment on the M3 flywheel, but 318ti's 100% for sure have a dual mass flywheel... to the tune of 27lbs =\ | | | 11-11-2008, 12:02 AM | #8 | Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: san diego Posts: 45 | Quote: Originally Posted by NeoPhunk Wrong, but forgiven. I will be replacing my clutch this spring, and was interested in swapping to a lighter flywheel from bimmerworld.com. Anyone used a lighter, non-dualmass flywheel in an m44/42 without excessive HP mods? Bimmerworld offers one thats 11lbs - huge difference from a 27lb dualmass. Wondering how it fairs for a semi-daily driver. | | | 11-11-2008, 07:24 PM | #11 | Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: san diego Posts: 45 | TIFREAK...the the thing that confuses me was that they did the change in motor at the end of the year and my ti was built 09/95... one guy sed it an m44 and some say it an m42... ima pull the vin and call bmw to find out what i really have NEOPHUNK... i had one in my old wrx tranny and it was night and day... however im with on gathering info on the people who run lighter flywheels | | | 11-11-2008, 07:55 PM | #12 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Just key in the last 7 of your VIN on realoem.com and it will highlight which motor you have. Otherwise, give your VIN to Mallard in this thread: http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18444 and he'll run it and post the entire build sheet for your vehicle. __________________ 4 MORE YEARS BABY!!! | | | 11-11-2008, 08:49 PM | #13 | Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: san diego Posts: 45 | jess... you are cool dood... thanks for the help and info | | | 11-11-2008, 08:54 PM | #14 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | No prob, you could also look at your thermostat housing, if it's aluminum it's an m42, plastic it's an m44. It might even say inside the driver's door jam if your car has a 1.8L or a 1.9L? Ohyeah, and the most obvious would be if it has a post-cat o2 sensor, it's an m44 since m42's were OBD1, they only had a pre-cat. __________________ 4 MORE YEARS BABY!!! | | | 11-11-2008, 09:06 PM | #15 | Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: san diego Posts: 45 | yeah the site sed m42 so m42 it is... now again when it comes down to ordering part for the ti... i get scared because they have so many options... ie: most sites support 6 cyl bmw parts instead of 4 cyl bmw like the ti is there a place that sells strictly 318ti parts... i know pelican has some ti parts... i just cant find lighten flywheel and clutch combo... again all the info is greatly appreciated | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
