Default Help Needed! Clicking Noise From Rear...

Over the past while I have had this clicking noise coming from the rear of my car. It was ever so slight that I only noticed it at certain times. Lately I have had to drive to Las Vegas a few times and after the latest trip it has become considerably louder. It goes away if I am braking, but comes back once I start accelerating again. I asked my mechanic and he said it is probably the wheel bearings. I checked to see if there was any freeplay in the wheels and they are rock solid. I also checked the internet and it seems like worn cv joints will cause the clicking and stop while braking. I checked the boots and there is no cracking or no grease leaking out. I don't want to replace one and find out the other was to blame as I am low on cash at the moment. Is there a way I can check my cv joints and bearings to find out for sure what it is?
