I recently instralled a short shift kit in my ti. The donor was an m3. Refer to the attached file I installed items 5 and 9 from the m3 I installed items 7,10, and 11 new. I love the action, but it appears the shift lever is in the wrong spot. Too far back and a little too far to the right. Anyone have this experience? I was thinking about installing the original selector rod (item 9). Anyone have some advice for me? Thanks | | | 03-05-2007, 05:37 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | I installed the M-Z3 shifter, and replaced the exact same part#s. You need to bend the selector rod to get the shifter where you want. All you need is a benzo-matic torch and a vise. Bend it, and put back in till you get the correct alignment. But the M3 rod was already bent... roughly in the middle. My ti rod was also bent, but very close to the connection to the transmission. The distance between the pins connected to the rod was about 20mm different; the ti rod being longer. I thought bending the rod was to create clearance to the driveshaft, not to put the shifter in th right spot. But I can see that it would do that, too. | | | 03-05-2007, 06:14 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | I bent the rod in the rear to clear the drive shaft. Then I twisted the rod to get the shifter in the center. Quote: Originally Posted by dave45056 I heard that you have to bend the rod. But the M3 rod was already bent... roughly in the middle. Then I'll bend it and twist it to get things to clear and center where I like it. Maybe I'll do the low cost weighted mod from understeer | | | 03-05-2007, 11:37 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | I bent mine with a hammer and a brick. | | | 03-07-2007, 12:09 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | Quote: Originally Posted by pnosker I bent mine with a hammer and a brick. | subtle. lol __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 03-07-2007, 01:48 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Port St. Johns, Florida Posts: 2,242 | make your own wsr. works | | | 03-07-2007, 02:45 AM | #10 | doesn't care about you. My selector rod was dirty, too. I added the 2nd bend... bead blasted, then painted the selector rod (for rust inhibitor) Then I added 2 layers of solder to get the weight up. Covered the solder with electrical taps and she's ready to go. I'll install it in the morning. It was originally 214mm, now it's 210mm. What do you think? | | | 03-10-2007, 12:51 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Port St. Johns, Florida Posts: 2,242 | how does it shift? looks aren't important..it's all about feel. lol. kudos, beats my middle of the night job for sure. | | | 03-10-2007, 12:59 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | I understand the idea behind adding the weight, but why do you feel it's needed? I like the fact that my shifter is stiff, it keeps the slop out.
