The outer most rubber trim, over time/age the corner shrinks (the red arrows) and water can get in leak inside the car. Like in your pic, it is the seal between the Cali top and the car. __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! What year is your top? Are you doing any maintenance to it before installing the new seal? __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! As a user on here said to use sealant to fix the leak and it did but only fixed the back corners. The front are still leaking and I think it's probably due because of clogging in the waterways to go down to the wheel well. For now it only leaks a little when it rains hard, but i park on a hill which stops the leaking too. I was thinking to clean up the sealant cuz I thought the fronts were due to the gasket but suspect its just clogged. Only maintenance i did with the top is re-lubricate the rails, before the gears were struggling.. hoping it didn't damage that "gear" i keep seeing on this forum. With the new lubrication its sliding good with out the gears struggling. I'm not sure what other maintenance is needed to the rooftop other than lubrication, which I'll need to recheck this weekend or so. Quote: Originally Posted by BlackBMWs No worries, glad to help out. I mean flat. I know water would have backed up there. The drain hose was hard and ridged. I have other tops where the drains are a little more pliable. I will use an air gun, examine and drain test all four drain hoses when I get around to dropping in the replacement top. I have the vert top treatment to apply and will dry lube all the guides and sliders. The motor I have to install has intact solid gears, so, I should be good there and now I have a new seal for the perimeter to hopefully address any leak areas. the other thing I wil do is put a set of hose clamps or at least some nylon tie wraps to ensure the drain hoses are snug and don't come off. I plan to take deinstallation pics as well as installation to add to the DIY base for the tops. Good luck! __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org! I usually park under something or a hill to avoid the leak. I'm going to take a air gun later when I service it at my friend's shop. I think maybe the leak is from the tubes and just backs up when it's pouring, but i think to get to it i need to drop the roof lining, just never got around it | | | 01-07-2019, 06:28 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2005 Location: Portland Oregon Posts: 1,363 | I'm just waiting for warmer weather before I replace the next cali top seal. Its pretty easy task if you don't have a headliner. Checking the tubes using a air tool can help, just be cautious to not put too much air pressure throw the line. | | | 01-10-2019, 12:21 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: PA Posts: 1,906 | I’m looking forward to see this^ __________________ | | | 01-10-2019, 04:32 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2013 Location: Seattle Posts: 513 | | | | 01-10-2019, 06:12 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Dodging potholes in SoCal Posts: 454 | Thanks for these pics. Was changing the seal as simple as it sounds? __________________ '96 318ti California Edition- Montreal blue '68 1600-2-Caribe blue | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
