I met loads of people in the old m3forums and by the time I started posting here most people already transitioned away from the forums. Glad this is still around even though not many come here anymore. __________________ -James 2011 BMW 328ix Sportwagon 1997 BMW 318ti Sport 1968 Chevrolet C10 1999 BMW 528it 2008 BMW X5 4.8 | | | 01-28-2022, 03:08 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: MD Posts: 126 | Agree. I feel like in the last 8 years there has been a steep decline in forums. I can understand this one as the vehicle ages, but I've watched it happen on other woodworking and vehicle forums as well. __________________ '96 318ti Base - few mods installed... | | | 02-01-2022, 07:22 AM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Nov 2021 Location: Melbourne, Australia Posts: 19 | 100% agree with your sentiment here. Hobby related FB groups are extremely toxic (and especially car ones) and are mostly full of people asking the same questions repeatedly and getting responses from people who are wrong, or people posting something for sale with people commenting (complaining) on the price. Forums (like this one) are a great resource, I can't count the amount of threads I've used that detail major repairs or googled the problem I had and found the answer straight away. I got into VWvortex around 2012 when it was still kinda strong. On the mk4 board, there were people who had kept updating the same car/build thread for over 10years! | | | 02-04-2022, 02:31 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: US Posts: 315 | Agreed FB/IG etc are super subpar. I don't have too much to add here often but try to keep it active. Other E36 is getting built on BFC which is decent. I've noticed though newer model forums are active. | | | 02-05-2022, 07:03 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2013 Location: NJ Posts: 27 | I agree with you all FB & others are suboptimal. There is a wealth of information in here and what alternatives exist just don't cut it for me. I hope there are at least of few of us enthusiasts who keep them on the road, see them 10-20 years in the future still running. Sometimes I wonder if that will be possible with the way things are going in the car world, but I'm still pretty sure you'd have to force me away from keeping it going. __________________ Past: '90 325xi, '88 325is, ‘97 318ti, '06 325ix, '11 328ix, ‘13 X5 Present '91 325ic, ‘97 318ti, ‘99 M3 | | | 02-06-2022, 02:17 AM | #6 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Sort of like vinyl- we who get in on the ground floor will be the envy of those “new comers” when they realize socialist media sucks. | | | 02-07-2022, 09:44 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Jul 2016 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 42 | Quote: Originally Posted by J!m Maybe true but the forum is way cooler. Plan to be here till they turn off the lights...like what they did to M3forum... __________________ -James 2011 BMW 328ix Sportwagon 1997 BMW 318ti Sport 1968 Chevrolet C10 1999 BMW 528it 2008 BMW X5 4.8 | | | 02-10-2022, 09:04 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | This thread gave me goose bumps. Every time I decide to close the door, someone reminds me how useful it is. I had a buyer for the forum but they backed out. Guess I said yes to quickly. I heard on NPR that even cassettes are making a come back. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-10-2022, 09:48 PM | #9 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | I have five home cassette decks currently, and two portable ones. I even have that ancient black vinyl disc technology fully active. Just inventoried over 800 CDs in my collection. Social media is okay for some things; but it is not a replacement for the forums. | | | 02-10-2022, 10:29 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I was going to share a FB post of the ti FB group then realized, I left it months ago. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-10-2022, 11:41 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2012 Location: Dodging potholes in SoCal Posts: 454 | I still come here for reference for certain repairs. It is a shame though...social media took over as more "social". __________________ '96 318ti California Edition- Montreal blue '68 1600-2-Caribe blue | | | 02-11-2022, 01:54 AM | #12 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | It is more social. It’s fine for casual stuff. But it’s trying to be a forum, which it can’t be. Try searching old data on a social media site… Here we have organization (mostly) and even decade old posts are relevant today. | | | 02-11-2022, 02:44 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: US Posts: 315 | Quote: Originally Posted by J!m Here we have organization (mostly) and even decade old posts are relevant today. | That's why I'll continue to donate to keep it going. Somewhere someone is looking at the DIYs and using them same as myself a decade ago. | | | 02-13-2022, 05:33 PM | #14 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2015 Location: NC Posts: 29 | Quote: Originally Posted by ZEK That's why I'll continue to donate to keep it going. There may not be a lot left to say in terms of DIY and troubleshooting that hasn't been documented already on this forum. There is no better resource for that anywhere else. At the least, continued membership is an insurance policy of sorts for a knowledge base of our cars. | | | 02-13-2022, 10:10 PM | #15 | Z3 Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Usa Posts: 660 | I check this forum daily. 4 Tis, and this is the best place for people that love that quirky car! __________________ Frederic 1997 318Ti M-Tech & 1999 Z3 2.8 | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
