when does it rattle? closed or open?

is the rattling part on the sliding roof or on the car?

what a bunch of d!cks!

a bmw dealership once tried to charge me $2100 to 'fix' my cali top - when it one day just stopped working.... I felt like putting my fist through the guys face for a split second.

turned out to be just a busted motor ($120-$200)!

after I realized I was about to be majorly ripped off - I wrote a nasty letter to BMW North America - which, off course, did NOTHING! LOL

Thanks..

It only happens when the roof is fully closed. So, if I back it up just slightly (not even open just tapped so it's not "fully" closed) the rattling stops.

I know the frontmost passenger side is loose - the gold circular connector - I can make it rattle just by grabbing the front panel and moving it up and down. I think other ones are loose too and same would apply in that all rattling stops when the roof open.

Can I lube those things to stop the rattling. Should I replace them?

I also noticed that one of the gray metal/plastic? mounts that has an arm attached to it (not sure what to call it...but it's part of the 2nd or 3rd segment) is cracked. I don't know that it's causing problems but wouldn't mind replacing it if not too expensive.

Hi,
Both the links for the TIS program for the removal/fitting of the california roof are dead, are there any other sites you have it posted on or could you send me a copy.
Thanx

if it's in the TIS (Techinical Information System), any bmw dealer should have access to it. that said, if it's in there, you can also buy the TIS on ebay.

let's see if mallard finds it in the TIS first

Mallard, you should post the document in the DIY section. Maybe Steve can help host the docs on this site so they remain available.

I'd like to read this thing too.

Not sure if you found a way to post the file, but these instructions would be helpfull to me as well. Dealer replaced the first roof under warranty but that was long ago. I've sometimes wondered how long it would take before I welded a steel roof in place of the big canvas, but if I have proper instructions, well...
Thanks! jcgrams@earthlink.net
