The one I am getting is a Quaife-style, so yes, no more clutches!

I saw that you were coming out to Laguna next weekend, what's the event?

M50 swap? What's that? An E30 M3 motor? I don't know what to call it, but I have a 1997 M3 3.2 motor swap in my 1996 318ti. We call it a 332ti.

You have a S52 code motor. Mine is from an ordinary e36 95 325i.

Ok, replacement diff is installed. Check
Schroth harnesses installed....... Check
All extra interior stuff removed.. Check
Yokohama Advans mounted..... Check

Off to the track again!

Going back to Thunderhill raceway on Friday for a NCRC event... WooHoo!!!

Full solo runs all day, looking forward to a solid day of refining what I learned last month.

Only thing that would make this better is if I had some more Ti crew to hang with...

So, as before, both myself and the ti came back from the track in almost the same condition as prior.

This was my first track day fully solo, and I was in a run group that was mostly faster than me.

In retrospect, I drove more aggressively trying not to be a roadblock, and I did lose control once around a low speed off-camber corner. I was pushing a little too much throttle and the back end swung out on me and I slid into the dirt. Overconfidence is a b****...

Odd thing is, the hatch popped open. I have never had the hatch open on its own before and it latches very solidly when closed. Has anyone ever had this happen? Yes, I had opened the back prior to going out on the track, and may not have gotten it fully latched, but it still seems strange to me.

As a result of the hatch opening while sliding in the dirt, the entire inside of the car is a dirty mess with bits of dry grass, dirt and very fine dust. From the headliner down. It's going to take a full day to get it clean again...

It was a pretty hot day (95 degrees by noon) and the track seemed slick to me (heard the same from other drivers). I was running very sticky tires (yokohama advans) and they are now solidly abused... further proof I was being too aggressive.

No video from yesterday, but here are the pics from the pro track photo guy;

http://www.gotbluemilk.com/web120824/219/index.html

There is another open track event in a couple of months, might have to book it as a birthday present to me...

There was also a very nice Alaska Blue S52 swapped ti running as well... The driver is not on the .org, and wasn't really interested in chatting and so I invited him to join, but he didn't seem very social or interested. Oh well...

Sounds like a successful day at the track. I wish they got a picture of the 4 wheeled dirt drop while the hatch flew open. That'd be rad. Are you running an oil cooler and is your oil pump nut secured?

No pics of the dirt drop, sorry... The track photographer does the same shots for all, you can tell by the pics..

I have never addressed the oil pump nut. I never heard of the M50 having that issue, just the S motors. Am I wrong? (btw, the motor only had 68k when I swapped it in, only has 88k now...) No oil cooler either, as I am not doing extend sessions, only 20 minutes at a time with some cool down time in between.

Video is marked private... can't watch it, but by your description I can guess what happened...

I had felt kinda dumb, as no one else in my run group went off track. But several seasoned drivers there were sympathetic to me and relayed their "off track" experiences.. Made me feel a little better.

No shame in going off.

I'll look into the settings.

Default No shame

No, there's no shame in going off. Parnelli Jones once said, "If you don't go off the road once in a while, you ain't goin' fast enough."

I've been off the road so many times at Midamerica Motorplex (MAM) in Iowa, I was the unofficial grass mower. I've been off because the brakes faded, or I braked too late, or I braked too soon and took an early apex, or I took a really dumb line, and twice because I got AWD wheelspin on my 3000GT and my turbo Eclipse. I've been off in pretty weird places, too--once, when I got blackflagged after an off, the steward said, "How did you go off there? I've never seen anybody go off there." (that was one of the AWD wheelspin incidents--when you get wheelspin on all four, it feels like you just hit a little dirt, so you keep your foot in it. That's the wrong thing to do with AWD wheelspin because then it goes right around.)

I don't know if I am happy to say that I've only been off once in the past three years (the dumb line, above) or not. That's because I don't know if I am driving a superior car now (the BMW) or because I am slowing down in my old age.

Ok, heading out to the track again tomorrow am... Forecast is for clear skies and mild temps.

Only upgrade I have done since last track day is the e34 rear brake caliper upgrade combined with SS brake lines, and fully bled the brakes with Super Blue fluid.

This will probably be the last track day this year for me, as most track groups stop running in the winter.

Looking forward to a fun day!
