It started really rough and then smoothed out after a little bit.
This is exactly what mine does when it 'washdowns'- one or 2 cylinders will eventually start
firing, it'll catch, run roughly, then slowly smooth out in 15-30 seconds. And then there's
no problem after that, as long as I don't do the 'start- let idle 30 seconds- shut down'
thing...

One additional thing that I do recall now is that last time I changed my oil back in november 2015 I used Mobil 1 0w40. Not my normal oil to go to. I usually use a 5w40 or 10w40. Not sure if this has anything to contribute to it.

It might-
that's what I use, and I'm starting to wonder if the lighter cold weight has
something to do with it.

Default Fuel Filter

Wanna bet it's your fuel filter. When they clog your engine doesn't get enough fuel to run - it starves. But after a while - a few hours, days, etc... the fuel moves (weeps) past the clog and you have enough in the lines to start, run, for a short time. Then the same symptoms appear. Try bypassing your Fuel Filter. If it starts and runs for 5-10 min.s without any problems then replace it.

Hi all i have a 1997 318ti M44 that cranks over but no fuel pump or spark.
so far
replaced crank sensor
bypassed ewsII
bypassed aftermarket immobiliser (tested them indivudualy and re-installed) new key set and reprogrammed ewsII
checked all relays they're all fine
fuel pump tested and works fine
no codes come up?
when i pull plugs there is no fuel on them
New fuel filter
wasted plenty of time and money on German Car mechanics with no luck
