I've read that the M-42's have forged internals. Any advantage to that? Is it a stronger engine? I've also read that M-42's don't have those damn plastic water pipes.

Forged internals are much better then cast parts in my opinion. The forging process compresses the metal under great amounts of pressure during the cooling process and causes a much denser metal with greater strength. Cast is just poured in the mold and let cool. You can tell forged parts from cast parts just by the lines in the parts where the molds come together.

Forged will weigh more for the same amount of material shape since it will be a denser metal but will be much stronger.

I like to use forged parts in areas where parts will take a beating and can break and cause a catastrophic failure. Crank, pistons, etc. I think all rods are forged???

Forged pistons will always need extra clearance in the cylinder walls so you do hear them slapping around and the motor will be a little noisy but it does not hurt anyting at all, they expand to the right clearance at WOT and are quiet when run hard. The forged pistons will take much higher HP but will still melt at 1,375 just like all aluminum, cast or forged, they just might last 1-2 seconds longer since they are denser and denser metal takes longer to heat up and melt.

Go forged if you are building a monster or turning very high RPM, you will regrete if you have cast parts they can break and cause a total destruction of your motor. Trust me on this...

The M44 plastic water head pipe are a big issue but with regular maintenance they are not an issue. I run a M42 block with M44 Head so I have the plastic water pipe on the head. Also M42 blocks have the plastic pipe on the block but that is not an issue unless you abuse the cooling system and rot out the block machine surface for that pipe point then it needs to be sleeved...

Hope this helps
