Default Oil on DASC fins :(

Hey all

I just bought a second-hand DASC is the UK (very rare here). I left it on my floor and some oil dripped from the manifold. Thought I better take a look at the supercharger itself! First pic is of the intake elbow, there is quite a lot of brown scank there, which is upstream of the supercharger. Second pic is of the entrance to the supercharger, the side of the supercharger where the fins touch feels slightly grooved. Third and fourth pic are of the fins, which have quite a lot of oil on them. The edge of the fin has little grooves on too. Now is it toast? Or has a load of oil from the cylinder head vent valve been shot into the DASC through the vent valve? Or is it the self sealed DASC oil unit has broken down and leaked into the supercharger?

Cheers for you help!
Dylan

most SC's have either their own oil , or you have to plumb in a fresh oil system (im guessing this one doesnt require plumbing if it can be installed my an average mechanic in a day or so). im guessing you might need a new seal/bearing kit (essentially a "rebuild kit") and be ok.

Im not familiar with the DASC whatsoever though, so dont take my word as gospel.

I owuld call downing atlanta to find out how to fix this...
http://downingatlanta.com/downingatl...argers_new.htm

My first guess would be to just clean it off with some degreaser but I'm not sure how that will affect the internal oil seals (??)

also, try PM-ing John - he should be able to give you some good avice!

That's not oil from the supercharger. Whatever engine that unit was on had a lot of blowby that, as you guessed it, came from the cyl head vent valve. I would try a mild solvent to clean it (like NOT brake cleaner or carb cleaner).

Don't worry about any of that. All of that oil is from the previous engine that DASC was on.

I would not even worry about cleaning it unless there is loose crap that could get sucked into your motor...

As previous stated the DASC has it's own oil system which is kept separate from the boost end of things.

Hi, thanks for all your really helpful replies. Seems like the engine it was on was in really bad shape. I guess the vent valve must have broken. As recommended I will probably just wipe all the rubbish off with a rag.

Unfortunately there is some play in the back ends of the rotor. I think the needle bearings have gone, as their is some wear to the rotor edges. The wear gets less and less the closer you get to the front of the SC. Seems easy to replace. Knock out bearings from the back, knock new pair in. Bolt back together. Hope thats all thats wrong with it!

Quite a lot of oil came out of the snout when I took it apart, so I dont think there was an oil leak from the SC assembly

Thanks for your help people!

Just what John said. It's oil blown by from the crankcase vent.

Even an good engine in good shape would experience increasing blow by when you add boost. I noticed the oil on the intake of mine and went ahead and installed a little air-oil separator between the PCV and the intake.

I would be careful on what chemical to use to clean the rotors since I think they are Teflon coated and you don't wanna strip that coat or you're gonna loose the seal

I finished the project this weekend and will probably post pix tonight...
