whats with my obd port

i opened up the hood to day to familiarize myself with it, took a peek at it, only to discover it only has 10 pins!! ?
it occurs to me that it might be a straight 9pin rs232 arrangement ... but really wanted to see a standard 19 pin connection not something wacky ;(

What car? You should have a 16-pin standard OBD connection under the steering wheel area and a round 20-pin for 1996+ under the hood. 1995 and below is still a 20-pin, I think (Not sure since I've never hooked to one below a 1996 under the hood) or it might be a 16-pin....I don't think there are any rs-232 connections

this is always the way for me .. my car was made in 2000, so i dont know what the round port under the hood is about.. defo only 10 pins there... from what you say i should have ALDL connection under the steering wheel? I guess its under the plastic? ..

heh this is starting to sound like a repeat my last car which was a 2001!.. it still failed to be aldl and the connection under the hood made no sense ... only person I saw getting info out of it was a mercedes tech with a think pad. the ALDL connection was there but not apparently ... I never found it any way in all the known places .. it was concluded it had it but the port was never connected to harness.
only problem with these car that are on the cusp of 1999-2000+ seems like manufactures were quiet put out over these systems and refused to implement it in conforming to specs fasion.

Not to mention, his location is London and he said his was built in 2000. I'm no expert, but wouldn't that make it an e46?

(and on that note, WHY didn't America get the e46 ti?!)

so what differentiates the e36 from e46 ?? some one on bimmerworld said it was e46 but I was thinking i was ill advised about it... I am fairly sure I have the same m42 engine as every one else... ?????!?

BMW NA doesn't think Americans will buy hatchbacks.
Doesn't stop them from bringing Tourings, Z Coupes and I would consider a X series a hatchback. And let's not forget Mini. So don't get me started.

Different chassis. Different suspension. Different interior.

I could be totally wrong but I thought that OBD had to be universal world wide starting with OBD-II. I believe a 2000 would communicate over CAN. I'm not sure about the under hood connection.

I'm definately not sure about a car in London but there are several connectors under the hood so make sure you got the right one.

Sorry I can't help more but I don't know these things.

1999 was the last year that 318ti's were sold in the United States. However, they continued to offer e36 compacts in Europe through 2000. In 2001, they switched to the e46 body style, which never reached the US.

I'm with you John, I thought OBDII was a global deal.
Just for safe measure, take a look around the passenger side and driver side footwells, and on the bottomside of the dash there should be a door with a little coin-turn slot that says "OBD port" on it.

d235353 can you take a picture of this connector and then I can look it up and see what it is. I have a lot of connectors to read BMW's but none are 10-pin. Maybe a picture would help me out. I'm interested in figuring out what the communication is on your car for under hood INPA connections which I have all hardware cables for...

yeah so i was correct to believe i had a E36

and I'm kinda glad i do otherwise i would of fitted the wrong parts to it lol
