Default Lowering the steering wheel

Hey guys, I was thinking of putting a spacer between the steering column and the mounting bracket to lower the steering wheel and angle it downwards. anyone ever try this? any comments?



this was done on a e30..

I don't see why you couldn't. Your dash fitment might be off though. Was there ever a tilt steering column available? If so a retro fit.

Euro E36s had an optional tilt steering wheel.

I gotta think if you do anything with the steering column you might also be altering something in the event of a front impact.

Yes it will alter the strength of the column brace. Unless the column is well designed I could see a failure in hard strong front impact.

But it's not umcommon to change the angle for a track car.

Just make sure its not leveraging funny on the input to the rack. I'dd look and have a helper move the column up and down to make sure everything has the slack to allow the change without ruining the input bushings on the rack.

IIRC Clex2 or somone did a tilt steering retrofit.

from what I read, it doesn't give enough tilt. It might not be worth the trouble for me.

Anyways, thanks for the input guys. I will be starting this project next week after finals..
