Default engine light and loss of power on cold start please help

Hi guys This is my first post so sorry if im in the wrong place, or if im going on abit but i want to give asmuch detail as possible so the diagnosis is as accurate as possible. I have a 318ti se e46 2002 semi automatic, it has 78k on the clock. I bought it last september and immediatelly had it serviced. it was running fine apart from having an oil leak, which i intially fixed by having the rocker shaft cover replaced. Somehow i managed to get another oil leak (i think by regularly going over a drop in the road on the way to my girlfriends, the things you do for love). Being the genius that i am when i was topping up on oil i accidentently over filled the tank will an extra ltr of oil. This initially caused no issues, other than making the car stink of burning oil in the mornings. On checking the oil stick i started noticing sludge and the engine seemed choppy on start up. I called out an auto mechanic about an unrelated issue with my lights but he noticed the choppy engine start and and i showed him the oil and he recommended i get my head gasket checked. I didnt do this initially because of the extra expense but over the last week or so when i turn the engine on from cold the engine management light would flash on when i would accelerate and it would seem like the power of the engine would go from a 2ltr to a 1.1! I phoned up a mechanic who said from what i described it sounds like a coil pack issue. I took it to a garage who did a head gasket check and said it was fine. When i mentioned the coil pack he said that it could be that but he had had someone come in with the same car and exactly the same issue last year and had replaced the coil pack but the guy still had the same problem which he couldnt resolve and eventually sold his car because of it (not to me, different car just incase you were wondering) Im going to take it to a bmw main dealers for diagnostics but i wanted to know if anybody had this problem and have been able to resolve it? Thanks for bearing with me

Default

One thing i forgot to mention. The problem is only on intial start up. If i drive the car for 2 minutes and then turn the engine off and on again the light turns offand the car runs fine
