I think I remember from about 4 years ago that this company had some 4 cylinder BMW turbo stuff on their site. It might be worth the effort to contact them and get an opinion. They appear to know what they're doing.

The difference for the turbo setup are:

DASC= you will get up to about 190 reliable
hp which is a fun ride in a TI. and is:
Fairly proven,
clean install
$$ under control.

Turbo =
Little knowledge base,
requires standalone ECU Because no BMW tuners really know them...

If you go above the boost provided by a DASC without
rebuilding the motor your going to blow the engine.

Its not that the turbo is a bad idea the problem is the
M44/42 engines are tweaked to the top to begin with
and are designed to be light.

The crank is plenty strong unless your goals are insane.
But the Pistons and engine base setup are not a turbo setup.
You need forged dished and relieved pistons,
Compression down around 8:1
Best option is the 4 cyl diesel crank (Forged billet.)

You will be 10K plus into a M44 or 42 by the
time you have a clean reliable powerful setup....
Assuming you want over 200HP.

I'd rather do a M3 swap and drive the car
than feed $$ to it...

Just my opinion mind you.... Its your car build what ya like!

Yes, you're right for all other... but so DASC with smaller pulley and TT stage 3 will blow the engine?
there are many with this combo, and I don't see all that engine blews...

It's true that if they are untuned too lean or too rich or with detonation they will blow...

I disagree with you on many points.....

While we don't offer any ready-made turbo ECU software for the M44, we know enough about the ECU to be able to tune it with a turbo. So getting a custom tune will most likely be cheaper than a standalone ECU

If the stock engine can handle 8psi of non-intercooled boost from a DASC, it can definately handle 8psi of intercooled boost from a turbo. The engine is the same design as it's 6-cylinder cousins, which we boost to 8.5psi with a turbo, and they have no reliability issues whatsoever.

Not needed IMO.
