And why do you say that? As long as you stay OBDII, you'll be fine. An M52 out of a 328 or Z3 is good for about 190hp, An S52 out of an M3 or MZ3 is good for about 240hp. Purchasing a wrecked donor car, stripping the parts you need and parting out the rest will be your cheapest option.

I say that because to make it smog legal you need ALL emissions equipment. If you buy a "wrecked" vehicle how do you know if the emissions equipment hasnt been damaged? To purchase these things could start snowballing quickly, whereas a non cali state can get away with not making it compliant and IS cheaper.

Speaking from experience, when you buy a donor vehicle it's usually running. If the engine or components were damaged rendering it inoperable, then it probably wouldn't be a good candidate for a donor car. I bought my wrecked '98 M3 for 3k. Pulled the drivetrain and all necessary accessories, parted out the rest as well as the original 318ti parts to be swapped and recouped all of my money. Basically the donor car paid for itself and I got a free engine and transmission out of it.

FWIW, The only "OBDII" parts needed, that aren't already attached to the engine, are the secondary air pump, charcoal canister, catalytic converter, post cat o2 sensors and instrument cluster.
