Unhappy TI DOWN: Engine Blew!

I said it before, and ill say it again, this year isnt going good for us TI'ers. My engine popped. I was just getting out of work from my second job, i barely got on the highway when KACK, my engine just straight died. Good thing is, i had barely got into the highway so i was able to pull right over. The engine went through 2 over heats, water inside engine, and the engine just finally died out and said thats enough. So im back to driving the V-Tec for about 1-3 months from now till i buy a replacement engine for sure. My plans are, to buy a good replacement engine with 180+ compression test. That way the engine is still in hard strong running shape and i can throw in either stage 3 masc or seam S/C. Anyone that know a good deal of an M44 let me know, im looking to see 180+ compression test on each cyl. As of now, the engine that ran for 10 years died at 96,634 miles.

6-10 months i will have an S/C on my new engine. Im hoping to buy a 97-99 engine. Also, my dad is gonna see how much we can buy a new engine 0 miles with a discount he gets. If its to much, then well just look for a good 500 dollar one in a junk yard with 180+ compression test that still runs strong to put a supercharger into.

To be honest, im not mad, i am sad cuz it sucks but i look at the brighter side, nothing happen to me and i got plenty of cars to choose from to drive. NOPE, i will NOT be getting rid of my car.

Here are some pics i took. My dad will check the engine and see what parts are still good and ill put on for sale.

When you open the hood and look at the engine, it looks like nothing is wrong and like its normal. But what u see in the pic is what happen. So im not sure if its fully fully dead or its dead for now and can be awaken again, but im done, i want a newer engine now.

It doesn't need park distance control, and hates decadence. It is musclepacked, yet lightly wound. It lets you feel the asphalt and get you going with the smallest touch of the pedal. It provokes, seduces, and demands to be driven hard. It looks, sounds, and smells like performance.

That really sucks. Was the over heat and water from b4 or happend tonight? Since your going to get a new engine why don't you just get an m50/m52/s50/s52? The m50 would be the cheapest to buy and will still be fast. There is actually a guy on bimmerforums that is selling an m50, but I'm not sure if it is just the engine or intake, ecu, and tranny are included. Search around bimmerforums for engines.

RIP young M44...

Another M44 with a thrown rod...

Let's have the production date, so we can compile some information on these major failures. Just a couple months ago, another M44 threw a rod. Are they from the same production run? Can we prevent someone else from breaking down if they were warned their production engine is likely to fail?

Man, that sucks. It seems to from overheating, like the others. I know mine did over heat once and the head gasket went, but I did know till I ripped off the head. I did notice the faint smell of gas. It was Idling rough also. Some codes(something like load cross check)
If you guys overheat your cars, I would do or get your engine a compression test!

That sucks. Like you said the only way to look at it is an opportunity to UPGRADE.

LOL, sorry but those pics remind me of Southpark- "They say the last thing you do before you die is crap your pants!"

Sorry for your complications- I agree though, dollar for dollar go for the 2.8L 6cyl swap.

production date is 5/96. You know i did say before that i did want to s52. But i dont have 7 thousand dollars to do a swap. Members, its engine, then suspension, brakes, etc. I figure, itll be way cheaper getting a replacement engine for about 600 bucks and stage 3 kit for about 3,800. Than i only spend about 4,500 and i dont have to buy brakes, suspension etc. Then it'll just be easier to do instead of changing every single hose, every line, computer, wiring harness etc. Thats what i thought about, an upgrade. The overheating and water happen before tonight. Over heat was like 3 months ago, the water went inside engine like 4 weeks ago, ive posted thread when these happen. After water went in compression test was 120 each cyl. I guess my engine upgrade wouldnt be a swap but maybe a better m44 with better compression.

on another note.. my car is raping coolant.. and i'm having it taken to a bmw specialist tomorrow after i replaced half the coolant system this last week (hoses, thermostat, radiator fan, etc)

i hope this is minor

bad bad year for TIers i suppose.. 1996 i think your last engine swap idea (the 600 + 3800) is pretty good considering the facility of doing it

it is, 600 for another good compression engine that would be available to swap a s/c. stage 3 would cost 3,800 and i get a clutch, which i will need soon anyway, and i get or if more, power than the s52.

I guess your 9 lives are up on this engine. If you really wanted a brand new m44 they go for about 5g's and not sure where you get one. It could've been worse, you could have totaled the car and then you would've been SOL.

you'd maybe make more hp at the top end, but you'll have a lot less everywhere else. Also, you're gonna be pretty much at the ceiling of the upgrades for that engine, unlike the s52, where you're just stock.

sorry to hear about your engine, I have an m44 short block, but no compression ratings. I could do $350 shipped. It had 109k miles on it. PM me if interested

Wouldn't you have to upgrade the cams and pistons for a s/c?
