Later M42 engines have 6mm valve stems. I believe the change was made when they put that engine in the E36 chassis. If you have 7mm valve stems, your head is from an older m42 engine (E30). But this does not matter. You don't need to go to M44 valves, just later M42 valves/guides/seals. If I remember right, the valves on these engines are very expensive, especially the exhaust valves.
