Default EWS

So I'm reading a lot about the whole EWS alignment thing and would like some clarification:

If you have the DME, EWS (some box on the passenger side of the car), the ignition module (where the key goes), and the key from a donor car, and swap these items into your car then no "alignment" is needed and your ti should start fine(?).

However, if you have a DME, but no EWS/key, then you need this EWS alignment to synch the swapped DME with the stock EWS/key. In order words, the stock ti key is retained after undertaking EWS alignment at the dealer(?).

Thanks.

Depends on what car you have and the donor vehicle. If you get an m50 with a red labeled dme, it doesnt need alignment. If it has a silver labeled dme as well as running it on an OBDII chassis, its best to just have it aligned or get everything from the donor.

I thought EWS-II was independent of and predated OBD-II, at least it did in Germany by about half a decade.

I stumbled across this short EWS-II FAQ while searching for something else. It is aimed at people doing engine swaps, for example, an S52 into an E30 -- which would be an ambitious but cool swap for a 'ti.

Do you need to take the actual vehicle to the dealer for the EWS alignment, as in towing your project in? Or do you take the parts to the dealer and ask for that service? Once I decide to take on this project, I think I'm just going to get the chip and delete the EWS. Thoughts?

You need to take the vehicle to the dealership to have an alignment done. If its OBDI and EWSI, just cut the wire.
