how about a pic of what it is and where it was? Sounds like it wasn't wired back up correctly or it was shorted when cut.

PN of part you replaced? name?

#7?

Hey familytruckster,
Thank you for posting.
It was part #7 on the diagram. I think i shorted out something when i cut it.
Would the Tranni control unit have anything to do with this part?

Thanks

It's the shift interlock solenoid. Prevents movement of the shift lever under certain conditions for safety such as brake not engaged, etc.

See here for operation:

It's a Toyota link - can't find my BMW link at the moment. Same basic operation though.

Thanks for the link and the information Monolith.

I think i shorted out somthing when i cut it out (rookie move). after i bought the new part and plugged it back in did very basic checking like blown fuse, tried to trace wires but it is really hard to see where they go or end up. it used to get really hot to the touch and the pin in the center would pop out when the car was running. now it is cool to the touch and no movement with the replacement part.

What year 318ti do you have? I might be able to find the wiring diagram for it.

Check your fuses and see if any are blown.
