Default No rev past 3500

My car has 228000 on it. I'm gonna try hollowing the converter. Any other ideas? Thanks

Wait, what is going on here? Your 'ti won't rev past 3500 rpm? If so, I'd check the crankshaft position sensor. I'm not sure if hollowing the cat will do much.

When this first started the car ran very sluggish at high rpms. It starts up fine and drives fairly normal cold now but as it heats up the problem begins. This car was given to me in trade. The previous owner who is a friend takes terrible care Of his cars. It was miss firing, vacuum leaking, and driven with no mass air meter for a long time. I had heard that others have tried a crank sensor and fixed it that way. But given the history of the car sure the converter has seen better days. So when hollowing the cat doesn't work would you happen to know the specs for testing the crank sensor because I'm going there next.
Thanks for your input all others are welcome. Sorry I didn't explain it better at first I was at work.

Cheers

I have an o2 sensor code but I've had it since I got it. Are these really that dependent on the 02?

Well thanks for you help. What I'll do is order the 02. I just always thought that the 02 was for fine tuning the mixture. I'm sure however bmw does things their own way. Thanks again I'll report back with what happens after replacing it. Thanks again -jason

Jason,
I had recently ran into problems with my o2 sensor. The wires were all buggered up and corroded inside the connections. Each time I got water around my car it would run like sh!t. I chased down every suspect before my discovery of the o2 fiasco. My car would run fine for a few miles. Once the car heated up some...limp mode. That is what your car sounds to be doing as well.
A used o2 sensor from a pick-a-part might be a good option at a fraction of the price. Just an idea.

I just ordered a new one for 84 bucks. I'm gonna try and remove the sensor and run the car
If the cat is clogged the exhaust can escape through the bung. That is if the car will even run. I know it needed the o2 anyway. I prob won't get to it till the weekend so I shall report my findings then. I really appreciate the help. Maybe someday I'll get the chance to return it.

Cheers-jason

My pleasure. BTW, this is what I read prior to fixing mine:
There are a few signs that your oxygen sensor may be failing. In general, it is difficult to diagnose problems with the sensor, unless all of the other components in the fuel injection system have been checked and determined to be operating correctly. Some of the symptoms of a failed oxygen sensor system are:

Irregular idle during warm-up
Irregular idle with warm engine
Engine will not accelerate and backfires
Poor engine performance
Fuel consumption is high
Driving performance is weak
CO concentration at idle is too high or too low
Check Engine light is illuminated

I do have all of those symptoms. With the mileage on the car and the way it was serviced prior to me owning it I'm afraid of replacing stuff unless its absolutely necessary. Hey another question I noticed a coolant leak above my water pump it looks like the water outlet housing. I'm assuming the tstat is in there. Are there any other gaskets for that housing besides the thermostat o ring?

Yes, there is also a gasket, if you drive a 1995. The part # is 11531721172
I don't see one for the M44. Only the AXIAL GASKET as you stated. The part # is 11531743179

I just went and viewed your profile and see that your car is a 1995. So, yes...there is a gasket. Check the part # I provided.
