only way to know for sure is to remove the DME and pop the cover off to see what's in there

It'll only take you 20-30 minutes to get it out and reinstall it. No big deal.

If it's a 1997 OBD2 DME it does not take a chip but rather a flash. Most company's that flash a DME with a tune will write on the cover in magic marker or place a label. If you are looking to get the DME/ECU tuned then please contact me and I can provide you with a top solution as I have done for so many others here

First decide what kind of rebuild,,, stock, upgrade, or what?

You don't need a kit. Engine rebuild gasket set (NAPA carries a good set.)
Then buy the hard parts that fit your intent for the motor.

You cant buy the bearings till its apart you need the crank and cam bearing journal measurements. and you need to see if the crank needs turned.

You may or may not need pistons, personally I won't do a street motor without them.
An you cant buy them until you figure out if the block can be just cleaned up or needs bored/sleeved.

You may need to buy a timing chain, gears, chain guides etc.... Guides for sure (I'm paranoid) But I'd do a full timing set.

Farm the head out, Maybe New valve guides, Absolutely new springs.
Send the block out for a chemical clean and bore work.
I'm lucky I have 3 top end engine shops in my town for the head work...

Good luck...

Dave

Stock rebuild can handle 15psi with the correct tuning. If you want over 15psi you will need a performance motor: 8.5:1 pistons (Hyper-K or forged, HP rods and a forged stock crank from a M42 or M47 crank (Stroker crank). Also there are many other issues that need to be addressed over 15psi, like using M3 shaved head bolts, BMM Deisel gasket from the M47, Valves that can handle the high heat (I use volvo valves and hybusa motorcycle springs), oil pump mod to the V-8 pump and re-direction of oil squiters. I'm sure I've left out some thinks but you get the point.

I total monster turbo motor will cost you around $12,000 this includes all labor. I would think a good stock rebuild should be less than $1,000 in parts, only a guess since I have never done a stock rebuild on a BMW motor.

Anything over 10psi and you will need a performance clutch since the stock clutch will not handle the torque (I know from personal experience).

Best, John S
