I get about 34 mpg at 70 mph

In town I get about 27-29 depending on the traffic.

The stick will do way better than the auto.

Is it all a matter of gear ratios ?!?

Thanks... Bewilderd about this....
It's all about gearing. The tis have very short final gearing to keep them reasonably peppy. For instance, no overdrive 5th gear. 4000rpm at 80 mph doesn't yield the greatest mileage when other cars are turning like 3000.

FYI I'm getting 22 MPG average from my 3.2 conversion, running Sunoco 94 only.

Default Wish I still had my Scirocco running

My 16V 1988 VW Scirocco must have had me spoiled. It was quick off the line, great to drive, and got what now appears to be excellent mileage. My 318ti is a pig.

Long Live the VW Scirocco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A decent 318ti should make around 28-32 mpg.

Model: 318ti M-Sport
Year: March 1997 - built to order
Transmission: manual
Tires: 225/50ZR16 Conti Extreme Contact DWS
Mileage: 486,032 miles
Trip: 343.9
Fuel used: Sunoco - regular with max mileage catalyst
80 highway 20% city

My results translates into;
343.9 miles = 10.817 gallons = 31.79 mpg
10.817 I do not top off when the pump stops that is all.

Original miles
same engine
one owner
I do go through 1 to 2 quarts of oil every 10,000 miles
compression and leak down still within specs, which I haven't checked since 374,000 miles when I changed the clutch for the first time.
