Good progress, interested to see how that drive shaft, etc... works out.

Hooked up the driveshaft yesterday and it seems to be ok. Not too tight, but we’ll find out on the test drive. I feel like the worst case scenario would be that maybe the 328I motor mounts are slightly more offset than the M44 ones. So I would buy them. If necessary.

Also, it doesn’t seem to matter which end of my phone I point up when I take pictures because they will always appear upside down on this thread. But just understand, I have tried. And I have reached the point of being OK with you people just tilting your head when you look at my pictures.

I’ve been doing research about how to align ews. There are a few potential solutions. I could just buy a flashed dme, I could use INPA to align them, and I found an app a person made over on Bimmerforums. Anyone use either of these or another alignment method? I’ll let y’all know when and what happens.

My dealer-tech friend Dillon came over today and made the magic happen with his laptop and DIS program. First turn of the key she spang to life. Now to hook up all the hoses and make an exhaust. Then happy fun time!

The transmission cooler lines can be finagled so that they attach to the ti’s cooler. Also had to take the transmission linkage bracket from the 318ti trans so the selector mechanism would mount up correctly.

The 528i exhaust won’t work because it bends differently to accommodate the much larger subframe of the e39 and the pre-cat section is double walled and about the heaviest damn thing in the world. So my bro said he has an E36 328i mid section I can have. Should bolt up nice.

FYI, feel completely free to comment in this thread. It’s pretty boring in here when it’s just me updating. I like a good dialogue and I wouldn’t mind meeting a couple of you. I understand there’s not a ton of traffic on this forum, but some interaction would make it a lot more interesting for me...

We’re here! As for exhaust you’ll have to make something but it’s pretty straightforward and can use most any old stuff.

Great work so far! Do you think it will be on the road this weekend?

EtherD5,
You work fast. Awesome to read it fired right up. So, the wiring harness worked!

I'm collected parts for my swap. Like you I found a California Top ti that had no compression in two cylinders - a great candidate for a swap. My donor is a '97 Z3 with the Al M52B28, same year as the recipient ti. Once completed I'll have to get passed here in CA by BAR Smog Check Referee. You have tough emission standards in your state to deal with?

For a working tachometer on a 6-cyl, will you be using the instrument cluster from the 528i donor? Does it fit? Or what's the solution? My donor instrument pod should fit my project (E36 to E36).

I'm curious about fuel pressure regulator. I forget where, but I've seen some on the fuel rail and others under the car by the fuel filter. What worked for you?

Living vicariously through your swap until I begin mine.

Alright! They DO exist!

@GotSWoo, Yessir the harness was just fine! Thanks again!! My fuel pressure regulator is on the rail in the ti and the donor. And coincidentally, I’m replacing it because it was hard starting without a shot of starting fluid and leaking around a few injectors. $35 on eBay.

It won’t be in the road this weekend. I still have to whip up an exhaust from the back of the mid section, figure out accelerator cable, power steering hoselry, and figure out the intake boot/MAF/filter situation. So a week or more longer before I can maiden it.

Thanks for your comments and encouragement!

Got the new FPR in and it still wouldn’t run. It sounded like it was trying to hit on 3 cylinders while cranking. So I decided it had something to do with fuel. I took the injector harness apart to test for current at the injector connectors and then had brain fart. What if the plugs are fowled? I took one out, fowled. 2, fowled. Etc. quick trip to the auto parts store later and I had 6 new plugs in and ready to go. Turned the key, same. Now I had a sorta rigged up version of an air intake on there for test starting purposes and I may or may not have forgotten to hook the idle air supply behind the MAF so the dme may or may not have known about the air coming into the idle circuit. Unplugged the MAF, vrrrrooooom!

That’s all for today... derp.

Great work, did you get a video of it running? Really interested to see some pictures as well. I guess you will start on the exhaust next. Keep the updates coming!

Oh, hey guys. Yeah nothing’s going on around here… Except driving my new TI! Slammed a quick n dirty tailpipe on it this afternoon, tied up the last of the crucial loose ends and drove that little lady down the road.

Now for the real... It certainly needs new brakes, it certainly needs four shocks, and it certainly needs all of the front suspension replaced.

I also need to figure out my cooling fan situation, and save up for air conditioning lines. Then probably a set of tires for my style-fives. What kind of lowering springs do you guys run? I’d like it to look a slight bit aggressive, but still ride as nice as possible. Not a track-day car.
