Default M42 Rebuild

I picked up an M42 off a local Craig's List ad. It is missing the oil pan but otherwise very complete. The owner did not know much about it as he purchased it with the transmission and he only needed the oil pan and transmission. He claimed the guy he bought it from said it was running. For the price it was worth the gamble. Since it is a mystery it will need a full rebuild assuming it is not a total mess when I tear it down.

No bearing chunks in the oil filter housing... good sign.

No sludge. Cams look good as does the upper chain tensioner. The engine spins freely. I also pulled each of the plugs, they all looked dry and normal.

Automatic flywheel removed and for sale!

The creatively repaired fan clutch made water pump removal more difficult than it needed to be. I shattered the water pump pulley to make it work.

Goodbye plastic impeller.

I removed all the accessories, threw away the junk and anything questionable. Now ready for the stand.

It will be interesting to see what it looks like when I open it up. Going to get back to Project Club Sport the rest of the week but I should have the head off next week.

My plan is to keep it a pretty stock rebuild. Maybe do a little match porting and balancing but I will know better once I open it up.

Got it on a stand today and removed the exhaust manifold and intake side engine mount arm.

Before I did that I loosened the crank pulley bolt.

Made some more progress over the past few evenings...

Timing covers removed.

Timing chain, gears, lower inner timing cover, rails and tensioner removed.

Cylinder head removed. Very pleased to see clean, damage free cylinders.
