Default Any experience with Kumho??

I finally got my ti, and I believe its time that I change the rubber. I like shopping at the tirerack and I saw some interestingly good tires for not so much money. Does anyone have any experience with the Kumho Ecsta MX, SPT, or the ASX? Living in texas the latter wouldn't be an option except for all that snow and ice that we have had lately makes me hesitant to go with the all summer tire. I do plan on getting some m3 contour wheels with summer tires, but that isn't for a while. Any thoughts?

I have Kuhmo 18"-ASX tires from the Tire Rack on my car.

They are All-Season tires, good city ride, good highway ride and good tread wear.

If you are looking for performance you might want a different tire but the tire is good for everyday driving and a good price.

The price is so cheap and the tread wear so good that I don't mind making the car fishtail around most corners.

I have Kuhmo MXs on the front of my car. They are almost down to the wear bars after one summer. They are nice, but don't last long. Look at Hankook all seasons.

Run. Run far. Run fast. I have had 2 sets of Kumhos and have been very happy, for about 10k miles. Then very disappointed. The 712s I have on my M5 are still above 50% but have NO traction left. The ASXs on my 325 wore out in less than 30k miles. I liked my Conti Extreme Contacts much more than the Kumhos, and they are the same price for my 325. YMMV

I'm going to disagree with moosehead (on both the 712s and ASX), but only because I was looking for something else in a tire. I'm happy with mine.

losichu; What kind of driving will you be doing?

I own Kumho Ecsta ASX's on my ti (225/50-16) and they have been great. Not sure how they will last, but I know BMW's eat tires. A friend of mine swears by the Pirelli P-zero nero m/s, but his only last 30k, too. Also, I have heard that most people who up rim sizes beyond what the mfg offered often compromise the suspension by increasing unsprung weight, or changing the offset, ect. Anyway, I think the ASX handles well in rain and so-so in snow. Check out this road test on tire rack:

I ran a set of 215/40/zr17 Khumo Ecsta Supra 712's on my E36 320 when I lived in Europe. At first they were great and then the sidewalls began to bubble out. They also would spontaneously go flat. When I took them off I found that the steel belts had shifted and ther was a great deal of loose rubber floating around inside of the tire. I don't think that the spped ratings are accurate. I averaged about 220-240kph and at those speeds, it's important to have confidence in your tires. I just didn't get it from the Khumo's. I bought a set of Yokohama Parada's as a replacement for the Khumo's. These were great tires, the sidewalls were much stiffer and provided better rim protection. They also gripped like nothing else. Great on both wet and dry. And best of all, they were only about $80. I bought the Khumo's because I was trying to save a few bucks. Big mistake! Sure they're great if you never drive on slippery or wet roads, if you don't care about your rims getting dented or rashed, And if you never take your car over 65mph. I'll never buy them again. Stick with a good name in tires. There's all kinds of cheap Chinese tires out there, Hankook, Wanli, LingLong, Khumo. I'd stay away from these tires. I bought my tires used on ebay for dirt cheap. I'm running 215/40/17 Toyo Proxes in the rear and Michelin Pilot Sports in the front. Both pairs had 8/32 of tread when I got them. 10/32 is what you get from a brand new tire. I paid $100 for 2 Michelins and $50 for 2 Toyos. $150 for good name HP tires. Before I spent money on a cheap brand I'd search for a good used set made by a reputable manufactuer.

We ran Khumo Ecsta V700 on the track as Intermediates, they were predictable and lasted better than goodyears or Yoko's ,,
They seem to be a good intermediate school and light race tire, if you need more speed there are others but they cost way more and don't last, and the car is a rental.....So we don't go for the ultimate tires..

I have no street experience with them...

The car they were on was a 200SX turbo (88) and it turns in the 1.36 range in Portland at PIR.

Have a good day...

Dave

I don't plan on doing auto-x or anything on these tires. I do drive "spirited" on the weekends, but its only 2 miles to work and i live on that road, so I don't make many turns getting there. I love going around turns fast when I can. I almost always buy yokohamas, but I want to try something different. G-force sports were really nice on my integra, but again i want to try something different. Nobody has experience with the SPTs?

I had a set of Kumho Estca ASX's on my car. Had them for three months before the tread was gone. I didn't notice it until I lost control around a turn. They were $34/tire. You get what you pay for.

I've had a few sets of Kuhmo Ecsta's (can't remember which ones) on my ti and Sedan. A set of rears would last about 10,000 miles. I thought it was my driving, but it looks like others have had similar experiences. The fronts lasted through 2 sets of rears, and looked about half done when the second set of rears were B A L D. I must have liked them, because I kept buying them...

This past spring I replaced my 712s with the SPTs. I never had any issues with the 712s. In fact, the last set lasted two years of daily driving and probably 15 autocrosses. I will admit that the rears were nearly slicks at the end of last summer, but that's to be expected from any tire with what I was doing to them. So far, the SPT is a much better tire than the 712. It's quieter, has much better grip, and seems to be wearing much better too. We've got the ASX on my wife's Beetle and they've also been fine. I would say they offer less grip than the SPT, especially when it's wet, but they're not too bad. HTH.
