Default Intermittent Power Steering :(

Help! I have a 1997 318Ti with 160,000 miles on it. The power steering seems to be Intermittent. While turning the wheel it switches between the power steering working and not working.

I took the car into a shop yesterday and had the fluid changed.........to the correct ATF fluid. That didn't fix the problem.

I'm thinking I should maybe flush the system myself again? The steering is not making any grinding or skipping noises. How would I know if the problem is the pump and/or the steering rack?

I've have done a search on this website, and i'm still not sure what my steering problem is. Power steering problems do seem common for the Ti.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

It was the fluid. As mentioned above I took my car to a garage to have the fluid changed to see of that would fix the intermitten power steering and they either didn't use the right fluid, or they didn't do anything!!!

When I got home, I figured I would flush and fill the power steering a couple of times. The first drain of the power sterring fluid came out Black........this is 200-miles after I had it flushed and filled.

Now with a fresh fill of RED ATF fluid the steering isn't intermitten anymore.

I told the garage to use ATF fluid, they highlighted it on the work order, and of course the power steering cap says "ATF only"........they missed it all.

I'm calling the garage now to give them........*(&$@(
