I bet it will be around 3250-3300lbs. The e90 is about 200lbs more than that, which would be about right... Knock another 100 off for wheels, and it's not that far from the 'ti's weight, yet double the power.
Oooh. This could be my One Lap of America car that I've dreamed of. Reliability, power, and tossability. That's probably a good call for 2009. Who wants to co-drive?

100 for wheels? 25 pounds at each corner? not a shot in hell your going to shave off that much unsprung weight lol... theres got to be some easy ways to reduce the weight though

I did on my e90. Stock wheels are 28.5lbs, and runflats averaged 29lbs each. I switched to non-runflats and lightweight wheels (16.4lbs), and lost over 20lbs each corner. Acceleration and throttle response was immediately noticeable. Those runflats are ridiculously heavy.

I don't think we will see a 4 cyl. or a hatch from BMW again, or at least not for a long time. BMW bought Mini for that reason. Mini is their introductory brand that offers 4 cylinders, light weight, and fun. If you want more mature you buy a BMW. I would consider a 1 series coupe as it is very nice looking, but prefer the hatch.
I want to see a crash video of a Smart versus an Escalade. I feel like I'm driving a mini-car when I drive the 318ti where I live. Everyone has huge SUVs, I can't imagine how awful that would be. SUVs wouldn't even see you in their mirrors!
here you go!!
keep in mind, who is going to go 70mpg in the city.

Why the perception in this country that a sedan or coupe is more mature than a hatchback, but a wagon is too mature? A hatchback is just a lightweight SUV. I think there's plenty of room in the US market between the Mini and the X3 for something like a Subaru Outback, or smaller like a 1er hatch.
Anyhow. . .I'm turned off by the whole 1er thing now that it is obvious that the 1er is just a replacement for the niche that used to be occupied by the 3er, now that the 3er is fatter, and, if they manage to squeeze any out, BMW won't be bringing any sub-3000 lb cars to the US. . .with the possible exception of an M1/M2, the lightweight 250hp turbo 4 cylinder we've been hearing rumors about, but it would probably cost ~$45k, so they wouldn't bring that to the US because nobody would buy it, including me.
All this jizz about how BMW cares so much for the environment, and they won't sell a car that weighs less than 3000 lbs in the country that burns most of the gasoline in the world. I don't care how efficient the motor is; if the car were lighter, it would be that much more efficient.
I don't think we'll see many cars under 3000 lbs anymore. All the safety equipment and reinforcements that are needed for todays safety standards are heavy.
I think doing European Delivery in 2009 might be my best bet, since we planning on being there anyways.
Brand new 1er on the Nurburgring anyone? What a perfect way to break it in!
My wife and I are talking about Euro Delivery but I will probably not have any vacation time accrued yet. I always thought we'd do it for our 20th wedding anniversary.
