The 328 puts out 230hp. Even if Shiv weren't already working on it, I would think that getting way more than 300hp with a turbo or two would be a given. It's pretty obvious that the factory is selling it de-tuned. . .maybe to leave some room for the 400hp M3. . .maybe for CAFE. . .

I still don't see a reason to become very excited over the 1er.
Should I be excited because the 135 might be ~200lbs lighter than the 335(1600 kg, 3527 lbs.), and will not be available as a hatchback?

The current M5 puts out 500hp, but I'm really not interested in a 4100-lb. car.

I found a wiki on the 1er. Looks like it tops out at 1450 kg in Euro trim with the 130i. Add a few kg for turbo hardware, larger brakes, and whatever crap they decide to stuff into the US 135i, and it will be surprising if they bring it in under 1500 kg.

Remember, the base weights you are using are for a 5 door hatch, which would be a bit heavier than the coupe would be. Personally, I'd be pretty happy with a 1450kg 135i (3195lbs), given the porkiness of modern BMWs. I'd also gladly trade the extra 10lbs for an extra 10 brake pistons up front, and two in back.

Unfortunately, given this day and age, I think they would go out of business if they catered to sports enthusiasts and left the luxo market in the lurch. They've always been a tech company... sometimes for the good, other times to simply keep ahead of the competition.

Also, an interesting thing to note is that the 328i E92 coupe weighs 3351lbs, the 335i Coupe 240lbs more. If you wanted a fairly lightweight 1er, I bet the 128i may just come in at close to 3000lbs or so.

Further reading reveals that the turbo motor does not use the lightweight alu-mg block. So by my admittedly ghetto math, just going from the N52 in the 130i to the N54 gains 34 kg, which puts the 135i at 1484 kg without any of the upgrades which will undoubtedly accompany the turbo motor. . .

Quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N54

Surprisingly the engine block of the N54B30 is similar to the older generation BMW M54B30 engine - all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. This is due to the fact that the newer N52 aluminum-magnesium engine block was not deemed as suitable for turbo-charging with the above-mentioned engineering goals. As a result, the N54B30 is physically heavier (195kg/429lbs) than the very light (161kg/354lbs) N52 engine.
335i. . .1600 kg
135i. . .1484 kg and counting

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N52
N52 = 272hp stock Euro?

Call me crazy, but I think I would prefer a valvetronic N52 with snappy throttle response tuned for, say, 300hp+ to a turbo N54 that weighs 75 lbs more and is a bit sluggish. Apparently the elimination turbo lag by using smaller turbos is still wishful thinking.

In all honesty, when I got back in my chipped 330i the throttle was way more snappy. Then again, the 335i had less than 200km on it so the throttle adaptation may have been on the slow side.

But some of the low RPM "softness" you feel is indeed boost lag. I think the hill assist also takes away a bit of "snap" upon take off as well (since it applies the brake once the clutch goes while the car is at rest). We did get rid of some of that low end softness through reworking the ignition table (the factory mapping is very conservative down there-- esp off boost). So yes, it can be improved. But no, it will never behave like a non turbo car. But I think that's a good thing when viewed wholistically

Weights are not listed for specific models, but sure, let's assume the 5 door is the heaviest. I just don't like the way the 1er is being presented as a new 'small' BMW("Must be small, they never had a series number as low as One before. . .") when it weighs more than the E36, and more than my E28 5er too.

and the 2002 parallel. . . yeah, they're reinventing the 1000-kg 2002 by making it weigh 1500 kg!

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - June 30, 2007, 6PM EDT... BMW will introduce a modern and authentic performance coupe that draws inspiration from its iconic 2002 models of some 40 years ago. The next BMW legend, the 1 Series Coupe, represents the core BMW philosophies of pure performance and premium design. By combining sporty rear-wheel-drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four, the 1 Series Coupe will reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created.

Yes, I've posted repeatedly that the Ti is ~250 lbs. lighter than the 318i sedan. . .and that's important, but it's more important when you have only 140hp, and the weight reduction takes you down to 2730 lbs. Anyhow, the Ti wasn't introduced as a separate series with much fanfare, and it's looking like the 1er may be only ~150 lbs lighter than the 3er. So yeah, I'm still not feelin' all the hype.

. . .and why are we getting a 230hp 128i instead of the 272hp 130i?
Yeah yeah, not enough distinction from the 135i. . .too confusing for the dumb American consumer, blah blah, blah.

Oh yeah, for those of you who are ready to tune your 135i, that'll be ~$1,400.
Add another $1,300 for the exhaust if you want 400hp.

The wiki only lists what's known. Nobody knows (except BMW, and those weights may change as they tweak the final specifications) what the coupe will weigh. I went to bmw.co.uk to see that those weights are for the five door hatch.

I'm assuming they are just following the same ideology as with all other US models. They are retiring the 3.0l detuned (325i)/3.0l tuned (3.0i) engines, and moving to the 3.0l detuned (328i) and the 3.0l turbo (335i). Totally not confusing, huh?

Emission and gas milage are the reasons why they detune models. By bringing the same two engines that the 3er and 5er have, they save in training and supplying a parts network for additional motors (on their least expensive model).

There are quite a few options for tuning the 335i nowadays. Since I also have an e90, I also frequent e90post.com. They have an entire section on 335i tuning. It seems there's another tuner hocking their wares every month. Prices range from $600 to $4500 for remapping, all the way to larger turbos. Seeing the 1er is a bit smaller, I wonder if replacing the turbos would even be an option.

I also wish they would have a 2800lb car with the 135i's power available. In order to do so, they'd have to use more exotic materials, which add expense. They have to remain X dollars less than the 3er, which is already a bargain in this country, compared to the rest of the world (with the Euro continually surpassing on the dollar as well). They have to offer all those BMWish amenities, which add weight as well. If they lost those amenities in lieu of the lighter weight, they would sell far fewer cars worldwide, and barely any (except to us) in the US.

One thing for sure, you'll see a LOT of 1ers in the racing circuit (ALMS, Grand-am, SCCA). Once you strip the interior, you'll have a car that will likely eat the field alive.

I've been waiting for this for 2 years. I think it will be a ball at the track. I hope I get one. It at all depends what we can sell our present house for.
