Default Supercharger Project

i just got my m42 for my 1974 bmw 2002, and i wanted to do some time of forced induction on it. i was origionally plannin on turboing it but the more i read the more skeptical i am of doing it. i think i have decided to go with a supercharger for multiple reasons. 1) the reliabilty and driveability 2) the big past of failed turbo applications 3) i might track the car some and turbo lag isn't ideal in that situation.

that being said i have some questions about the supercharger application. i know about the DASC kit but its pretty pricey and i am more of a DIY'er anyways, although my knowledge of supercharging a car isn't the best(hence trying to learn, right?). my question is what would i need to do to take a "junkyard" supercharger and put it on my car. the DASC kit uses an eaton m62 blower and that is the same as the GM cars of the 90's (grand prix gxp's, bonneville's, etc.), so i was wondering if i could use one of those and make my own "kit". if so what would i need? i've also wondered about the eaton m45 from a mini cooper S. if this works, the same question please (whats needed for a kit)

i apologize the the lengthy post and noob questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance!,
-kevin

I believe someone started a similar thread a while ago, the Mini supercharger wouldn't work, and I think the casing for the GM supercharger is different, I'm no expert on this so don't quote me on that

I'm pretty sure it can be done but you will need to be a good fabricator and welder. I don't think the Eaton M62 is a good canidate. I've looked at it close and it won't fit like the MP62 that the DASC uses. They are two totally different castings but use the same internal parts. Your better off finding a used DASC or going turbo

A DIY supercharger project using an Eaton M45/62 is much more complicated than a DIY turbo project. For a turbo build, all you really need is decent welding skills to fab up a downtube as most other parts can be purchased. A supercharger build takes much more skill because you will in all likelyhood have to fab up a custom intake manifold and some way of adapting the TB to the SC.

Check out this guy's thread on a DIY SC build using an M45 on an E30 325...

If you select a turbo properly and aren't looking for more than a 50% gain in HP, turbo lag will not be an issue. The power delivery should be similar to an SC. Now if you pick a turbo that will give you 400HP out of an m42, then you can expect alot of lag.

Try this link of a supercharged M42 using an SC from a Mini-Coop... you can't really see his custom intake manifold. This guy has great fabrication skills and the shop resources to complete his projects.

Since I'm installing a DASC on my Z3 (M44), I bought this book. One of the installation example it gives is a twin-screw (not Roots) installation on an BMW M44. It also gives you an idea of what to consider when doing a custom installation (blower displacement, pulley size, boost, intercooler size, etc).
I would recommend it big times, particularly if you're thinking about a custom setup: regardless your knowledge and experience with SCs, I think having a structured and organized way to think the project through can only benefit the outcome.
