I changed the plugs (denso irridium), air filter (K&N drop in), fogged the airbox (3in tube), and changed the precat o2 sensor. I did them one at a time each one bumped the gas mileage up. Now if I reset the mileage comp. at 60-70mph cruise it will get 37 maybe a little more. Compared to before it would get 27. Im really impressed at what a little maitenace and slight modification can do. Driving 'normal' I get 28-29, driveing fast I get 26-28. Before I got 19-21 and 20-22. -Dave | | | 04-21-2005, 02:38 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: cary, nc Posts: 2,259 | i was getting 18 MPG...but i changed the thermostat...and that did the magic trick...now getting 30ish MPG... there is nothing better then jumping from 18 to 30 MPG...makes me happy! __________________ 1995 318ti Active Pioneer Speakers [] Aluminum Billet door locks [] ACS Pedals/Deadrest [] ACS Shift Knob / E-Brake Handle [] Clear Corners/Tails/Sides [] Sylvania Exterior Lighting [] Custom CAI [] Dinan Engine Chip [] Dinan Transmission Chip [] H&R Race Springs [] Tokico Illumina Shocks [] BMW X-Brace [] Relocated Lighter Mod [] Custom iPod Mod http://www.cardomain.com/id/robcarync | | | 04-22-2005, 08:04 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: N. That seems kind of odd to shoot up your gas mileage, but I'm interested. | | | 04-22-2005, 10:40 PM | #4 | Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Posts: 91 | Losichu, give that 02 sensor a little time. I saw the biggest improvements from it.My check engine light was only intermittant (sp) and it helped alot. -Dave | | | 04-23-2005, 12:12 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: nh Posts: 21 | I was getting like 25mpg and now hit 29mpg this week. This is in a 95 ti with auto. Replaced the thermostat so it was always running right in the middle vs. cold to mid range. I was also trying out 87 octane and went to 89. | | | 04-23-2005, 01:43 AM | #6 | Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Posts: 91 | The manual to our cars says that the minimum octane is 91, its a high compression engine 10:1. Sounds risky putting anything less, I use 93 always. -Dave | | | 04-23-2005, 02:49 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Garden City, NY/Daytona Beach, FL Posts: 228 | Quote: Originally Posted by KdCass The manual to our cars says that the minimum octane is 91, its a high compression engine 10:1. I use 89 (Mid-grade)... I think I may switch to 93 once I put some more performance oriented upgrades in place. __________________ --------------------------------------- '97 Hellrot 318ti - Active, 5 speed 17'' BMW Motorsport Wheels ACS-"Style" (E-Bay, haha) Racing Pedals M Frontspoiler (OEM) Alpine CDA 9827 MP3/CD Head Unit Alpine E12 Subwoofer (now stolen) Audiobahn A4002T Amp (also now stolen) Dented driver side fender (provided courtesy of blind 80 year old woman) Keyed passenger door (provided by someone who likes to key red cars) Soon to come (now that I've graduated and have a real job) S52 Engine Swap!!! Assuming the tank holds 40 litres, that's 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres (as we measure it in New Zealand) or about 37 mpg. But that's imperial gallons, which are different from US gallons. 1 US gallon equals 3.79 litres. 1 imperial gallon equals about 4.55 litres, so in US terms we used about 31 mpg. But I'm not sure how much the tank does actually hold. | | | 04-25-2005, 06:44 PM | #11 | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: nh Posts: 21 | The thermostat being stuck wide open will definitely cause issues with mileage and cats. I had an a set of cats go on my Audi because car ran too rich for too long. I also had little heat on the cold winter days in northern NH. On my 318....My fuel mileage went up 3mpg , to 29-30, with the thermostat change. Worth the 30 minutes of work, IMO. I am sticking with 89 octane. The engine has a knock sensor and adjusts accordingly. Unless I'd see 35 mpg with it. I did notice some intermitent knocking with 87 | | | 04-26-2005, 12:45 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | I get 28 to 30 on my 95ti. My manual says 89 octane, I find it makes power fine on 87, and I get the 30 on 87, 28 on 89, 25 on premium. Which kind of makes sense in our oregon climate, Lots of humidity, Higher percent ethanol than average for most areas. (We get a full 10% ethanol here for emission control ) Dave __________________ Dave - PDX 1995 318ti - Active Black and Tan. 2005 330xi - Mtech 1 - 6spd - Orient Blue/Black | | | 04-26-2005, 04:40 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: N. I do have a constan CEL now and it says lambda control #1 is causing the problem. I was told to check the vacuum hoses. I feel dumb for asking this, but where exactly are they talking about? Ive been looking but have had no success whatsoever finding any vacuum hoses. Please help as I feel this is what is causing my miserable 21 - 23 mpg | | | 04-26-2005, 04:44 PM | #14 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | lambda #1 would be the oxy sensor. what told you "lambda control"? never heard it that way (other than in the ETK, they list the oxy sensors as lamba probes) __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-26-2005, 05:15 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: N. I'm checking vacuum hoses but I don't know where to start looking. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
