Default Check engine light problem- MAF or ???

So I've been trying to get my car inspected, it's a '96 318ti with m44. I found out that the check engine light was not working- the bulb was burned out- so I replaced it and it works!! Bad.

I scanned the car to see what the code was, and it gives me an error P1140, which is a MAF/TPS error. So, I replaced the TPS since it looked crusty and was cheapest....light came back after ~50 miles. So, I changed the rubber intake boot since it was original and might have been suspect (It has some cracking but no leaks, apparently). Reset light and it came back again. So, I bought a used MAF from a board member here and installed it- reset the light and drove ~150 miles, no light. I was planning to run by and get the car inspected today after work, but the light came on when I started the car to leave work!!! Same code- P1140.

So, WTF is it??? Did I get a bad MAF?? Could there be an intake leak somewhere, what could it be!!??

FYI, I cleaned both MAF's with MAF spray cleaner before installing them- I followed the directions on the can, and let them dry before starting the car- no difference was noticed.

I need to get this car to pass inspection before Aug 01 or the state will fine me for being out of compliance....

Thanks for any info.
