Default Re-covering the headliner

Finally got fed up with the sagging headliner fabric. I just got done taking the headliner panel out - not a trivial job, but it went much easier than I thought.

My question is about cleaning and prepping the panel. I read the article on Pelican Parts, and it just says to clean off the old foam with a stiff brush. I did that, but there's still a sticky residue on the panel. Will this residue interfere with the new adhesive? If so, what's a good product for getting it off?

Also, I haven't bought the adhesive yet. And recommendations?

Cool

I brushed all the black off with a wire brush. Just make sure all the black sludge is off. It balls up and takes time.

The adhesive you want is permatex, big orange can blue top. Part number 765 1826.
I did this job and have some tips or ideas. I learned some things.
The black foam back material pelican sells is perfect. You have to get extra for the pillars and moon roof panel.
I cross hatched the adhesive waiting 4 to 6 mins between sprays. Maybe 4 coats or so. Let it tack it so it doesn't soak through. I started back to from (visor section last).
You will need extra hands. Working it into the visor pocket and mount pockets are sorta tricky. The area needs plenty of set up adhesive. Same as around edge along the windshield.
Roll the windshield edge under back and clip! Don't cut flush like I did! You can trim flush on the sides, but not on the edges that face the windshield (pillars too). I have small spots where you can see the gray foam thickness, rookie error.
Mine came out awesome. Couldn't be happier. I left the oh crap handles off for a cleaner look. Have fun, take your time.

Thanks for the advice - the Permatex worked good. You're right, the visor pocket was tricky. I wound up with a few wrinkles in that area, but it looks a hell of a lot better than before.

I used alcohol to clean the sticky gunk that wouldn't come off with just brushing.

If you haven't put it back in yet, I'd check the moonroof cartridge bolts to make sure they are tight all the way around. If you removed the cartridge for the panel liner replacement, I'd use lock tight on those.

No, I put it back already. I didn't re-upholster the sunroof panel, that seemed like it could be way more work than I want to do.
