I'm thinking maybe it is the p/s pumps. I'm not really talking about any specific problem with my car in particular but it seems like most 318's i've worked on or listened to sound whiny, espically at idle... any thoughts to satisfy my curiosity? -ian | | | 01-15-2006, 01:21 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: MD/VA/DC Posts: 834 | its the supercharger HEHEHE J/K | | | 01-15-2006, 02:33 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | It's just a small-displacement, high-strung motor. BMW motors are often characterized as "raspy," especially the ones in the M3. Most high-performance builds sound this way, save for american muscle. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 01-15-2006, 03:37 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2004 Posts: 411 | its because its a POS engine | | | 01-28-2006, 07:55 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Sydney NSW Australia Posts: 4 | My whine has turned into a scream... My neighbors say that they can hear my wife's 316i Compact screaming from two blocks away. So far I've repacked the bearings in the alternator, the two serpentine belt tension pulley bearings and now I'm attacking the power steering area. I've just pulled the fluid expansion resevoir and back-flushed the filter therein. I'll put it back in tomorrow with a fresh ATF flush to see if that helps, before pulling the pump and rebuilding it. It's been screaming for a couple months, doesn't seem to manifest a debilitating mechanical issue, so far just the noise. Problem is the annual inspection required to re-register the car, the garage won't sign off on the inspection with the noise so obviously demanding attention. The registration expired a couple days ago, so gotta get it fixed this weekend. Definitely a whiney sound, very high-pitched and variable with engine speed. A lot like a supercharger as already facitiously suggested. In fact, that's what I told the two kids in the rice burner the other day who asked what the sound was while stopped at a traffic light. I think they believed me... Bill in Sydney AU | | | 01-28-2006, 08:25 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: San Francisco Posts: 308 | I just got a new Acc. Belt Tensioner for the P/S pump, I;m hoping that will take care of the whine/whistle while at idle. __________________ '99 ti /Mtechnic, Schwartz II, Meyle Control Arms w/Full Metal Ball Joints, PowerFlex poly LCAB's, Pirelli P Zero/Nero 225/50/16, "the d-baffle"...... | | | 01-31-2006, 04:22 AM | #7 | Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: San Diego Posts: 85 | does anyone know why mine whines for like 5 seconds after i shut my car off??!! | | | 01-31-2006, 04:23 AM | #8 | Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: San Diego Posts: 85 | P.S theres alot of whining in the thread. how do we fix that?? j/k | | | 01-31-2006, 04:56 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Muncie, Indiana Posts: 1,551 | Alot of the whine is because our motors have a metal chain DOHC timing belt. | | | 01-31-2006, 06:35 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Port St. Johns, Florida Posts: 2,242 | I thought it was the straw of a intake the M42 uses. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
