This is a result of a long story, but, I have been smelling gas fumes in the car ever since the BMW dealership replaced my fuel pump a few weeks ago while I was in the middle of a road trip. At first I thought the smell was because my car sat in their shop with doors open for 2 days, but it has been becoming worse ever since... So today I have some free time and I decide to investigate...pop off the back seat, remove the little fuel pump cover and find that there seems to be missing something here... am i crazy? Shouldnt there be a hose hooked up to that second plug? the smell of gas is really strong.. a certified BMW tech did the work so i figured these guys should know that they are doing and wouldnt let me leave with an unsafe car, but, should I be worried? | | | 10-25-2005, 10:58 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | There should most definitely be a hose on that plug; it's a vent hose. You've probably noticed that the smell is stronger on warm days? __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 10-25-2005, 11:02 PM | #3 | Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Iowa Posts: 54 | this has only been for about 3 weeks and its been pretty cold, so i have noticed a difference except when I have my windows closed vs. open. im heading to the parts store to get a piece of hose and just plug it in and vent out to not in my cabin. also will seal the fuel pump cover with some silicone. | | | 10-26-2005, 12:25 AM | #4 | Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Iowa Posts: 54 | The mechanic that did the work is a BMW dealership in London, Ontario. My fuel pump went out on a road trip... so I had to bend over and let them do it. I was out for a wedding and didnt have tools and time to do it on the side of the road. So the dealership is about 600 miles away. Truth is, this car is somewhat new to me (3-4 months) and I dont know if the line was missing before the dealership did their work. I dont see why they would remove it, so i bet odds are they didnt remove it, so its not their fault. Dont know why it started smelling now though. So I just bought some hose, plugged that hole and vented it to the side of the car...and sealed the fuel pump cover with some silicone. No more smells. | | | 10-26-2005, 02:45 AM | #5 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | what year is yours? i believe what aceyx is referring to is a vent hose that goes to the carbon filter up in the front of the car (at least that's where mine is). is a plastic tube that runs the length of the car underneath (along with the two metal fuel lines - one of which has the filter in-line). it SHOULD already be there (and hopefully within reach). see if you can see it/fish it out. the links to diagrams below may help out (this is for my VIN, 5/1996 manufacture date): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...91&hg=16&fg=05 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...15&hg=16&fg=10 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...11&hg=16&fg=15 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...45&hg=16&fg=15 __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 11-28-2005, 07:26 AM | #6 | Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Iowa Posts: 54 | While this post is old, I have found my problem and it may be relevant to someone in the future so here is what I found. The tech that installed my new fuel pump didnt install the seal ring correctly and it fell into the gas tank! I replaced the seal with a new one that I had ordered and my ti smells normal again. | | | 11-28-2005, 09:08 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | Gasp! Did you fish out the seal ring? __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
