Exclamation The Engine overheated!!!

I have been having some promblems with the engine temp. in my car. So i got the thermostat replaced and took out the fan relay since my car could not warm up since the relay keeps the fan on the whole time the engine is on. So to slove this temporarely i took it out to cut the fan off since it was cold conditions outside. Long story short I was sitting in front of someone's house with the engine on to get some heat and i didnt notice but the temp. got up to the 3/4 mark and a little bit over it. I immediatley cut it off and let it cool down. It has been running any differant and I took it out of town and it did fine. Does anyone think that therre could be something wrong or ever had a car over heat and something result from it????

If you only got it up to 3/4 on the temp gauge you should be fine. You have to worry about pegging it all the way out and driving it like that. I would say that if you catch it as soon as it pegs all the way you could get lucky and not damage the engine as long as you immediately turn it off.

Just idling to the 3/4 mark won't do any appreciable damage.

If you're running fossil oil, change it as soon as possible.

we drove 12 hours motorway speeds from Denmark to Calais (to sail to england) with a weak viscouse coupling and 35 degree summer heat.

the engine, a M20b20 made it but got seeeriously hot, so much so when we got to calais and borded the ferry, i had to leave the bonnet open for the duration of the journey and it was still over 3/4 when we landed,.. then drove 3 hours through london town.

the engine made it, but i advise you check your

Fan coupling / viscose clutch
oil and filter
coolant
thermostat
waterpump

I had this problem just last week.

Turns out I had an air lock. coz I was on the side of the road, I had to open the bleed valve on top and let the steam out then opened the filler cap.
Once the steam stopped coming out, I filled it with Evian (£4.00 worth to be exact), there was no friggin water in there. I followed the refill guidelines and now I'm ok I can idle as long as I want.
