Default Bosch DME

My idle issues are back. Found a much better mechanic to look at it, and it is stumping them as well.

Does anybody who has done a motor swap have a 95 M42 DME available?

0 261 203 282 Bosch Motronic M1.7.2 w/ EWS-II

It has a silver label.

I have one of those, I think, and you can have it for the cost of shipping.

Two problems with it. It has a 24hr battery drain. Leave your battery connected and the next day it will be dead. But, if your car acts the same, then you know you computer is good.

Problem number two is that it is in the garage and the power is out from the ice storm. I can confirm the part number tomorrow when the sun is out.

Have sent your injectors off to be cleaned? Mine were extremely dirty at 100K miles (particullarly 2 and 3).

PM sent. The issue I'm having is with my Jim Conforti chip and the DME in the car. If I put the stock chip in the car it never stalls, with the JC chip it will stall when cold. So I'm looking for both a spare, and the chance to try that chip on a different DME. Also hoping to pick up a dinan chip to see if I have issues with that chip.

I've talked to three different major distributors of Jim Conforti chips and they have never heard of this happening.

Although I have to get EWS re-aligned, so really just need a spare at this time as it is possible the issue is not with the JC chip, and DME issue waiting to get worse.

Can somebody confirm that if I swap out my existing DME in my EWS-II equiped car that I will have to get the EWS/DME aligned by the dealer?

I heard back from Jim Conforti and his take is that I have a counterfeited chip or some other kind of electrical problem, but no explanation on why it worked fine for a while in Andy Chittum's car, and it has worked fine for over a year in my car. And no possible explanation as to why it works fine with the stock eeprom. I didn't expect that much over an internet email. He made sure to say atleast twice that there is no way to know if this chip really came from him or not. He did tell me that his chips do not touch any settings related to warm-up enrichment, or idle parameters. He also feels that if the contents of the chip was damaged the car would not start, or it would throw a CEL.

I'm able to change the tuning eeprom in my car without doing anything to EWS. But I'm fairly certain that swapping the complete DME that it would fail to pass the EWS checks.

Here is my spare DME and the two EPROMs. This is the one for my car. I did not have the dealer align the EWS.

I removed the EPROM, for whatever reason. And I have a spare that I bought from the dealer.

Thanks Dano... So can anybody explain how you can swap the DME without needing re-alignment? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of EWS?

I know I can put a performance chip into my car without getting anything done to the EWS system, but I've read where other people with 95 318s have needed to have the eeprom/dme aligned after getting a performance chip... For the OBD1 cars is it just a matter of the keys matching up to the EWS, and then they allow power to the DME?

Let me know what shipping is to 32810. It can't be more than a few bucks, and it will be money well spent to let me know if my problem is DME related, or definitely the chip. I found a guy locally that can rebuild/repair the DME so that I can have a good spare.

I was told that the OBD-I version of EWS-II in our cars does not need to be aligned by the dealer, but the OBD-II version does need to be re-aligned.

Payment sent. My car actually uses the 1996+ style of oil filter. The tall skinny one. I have two of the short fat filters for the early year 1995 cars that I can't use as well.

Got it the other day. Thanks a lot. I put my JC performance chip into your ECU and my car never stalled. So my issue seems to only be with my original ECU and the performance chip. Just took her out for a spin and she was running great. Just went ahead and disconnected my battery to be safe.

I just need to find out about getting both of these units rebuilt, and then I will be good to go with a spare. The best part is that I will be able to use the better tune for a track event in 19 days.. woot!
