When I start my car in the morning there are a few drops of oil, but when I pull her in reverse and drive off there is a big puddle? This only happens that bad when my baby has been sitting for a while. Anyone know why? | | | 05-16-2005, 09:53 PM | #2 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | to clarify, before/when you start it, there are only a few drops of oil ... then when you back out, you notice a much bigger puddle? if you leave it idle there, the puddle doesn't form? have you put something down to catch the fluid leaks do determine if it's for sure oil and not trans or some other fluid? seems very odd ... __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 05-16-2005, 10:02 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Southern California Posts: 420 | It's oil Quote: Originally Posted by cali-ti to clarify, before/when you start it, there are only a few drops of oil ... then when you back out, you notice a much bigger puddle? if you leave it idle there, the puddle doesn't form? have you put something down to catch the fluid leaks do determine if it's for sure oil and not trans or some other fluid? seems very odd ... | If left in idle it only drops 4 or 5 times in 15minutes (timed it,) but when I place it in reverse, it's like "old faithful" I placed a pan under it to determine if it was oil or not. it's oil. | | | 05-16-2005, 10:08 PM | #4 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | damn ... any way to trace where it's coming from, where the source is? i'm guessing a seal, but i have no clue what one. hopefully some of our top notch guys will have an idea. obviously an auto trans ... does it seem to seal up after that? i guess you said so ... how long does it have to sit before "old faithful" reappears? hours/days/weeks, what kind of time frame are we looking at? __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 05-16-2005, 10:16 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Southern California Posts: 420 | If she sit's for more than an hour it will appear but not as bad as all night. There is a sliver pan, to the left side on under the engine that has the most oil on it. I noticed that a screw is that is placed on it, is the one that drips when in idle. | | | 05-16-2005, 10:30 PM | #6 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | any way you can take a pic of this pan/screw to point out where it's leaking? i'm a visual guy ... pics always help i don't have my car now either so i can't poke my head under there to see what you're talking about what year is yours? just trying to determine m42 vs m44 engine. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 05-16-2005, 10:35 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Southern California Posts: 420 | 1997 318ti-A Sport Coupe Quote: Originally Posted by cali-ti any way you can take a pic of this pan/screw to point out where it's leaking? i'm a visual guy ... pics always help i don't have my car now either so i can't poke my head under there to see what you're talking about what year is yours? just trying to determine m42 vs m44 engine. | I can take a picture, but I have two issues; 1.) I do no trust the BMW Dealership here everytime my car goes in for one thing, it has 5 other things that pop up. I fixed both my window regulators the other day! (Happy Dance) I also fix a cable line that run under the chair and up the side to lift the seat up and down. I have a friend driving down from San Fran today to help me pin point what's going on with my car. Thanks for all the other advise you guys have given me. So far I have saved over $500.00 from tips you all have given me. I will donate a membership fee for the tips I got from here! This will make it easy to see where the oil is coming from. | | | 06-07-2005, 07:21 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Manhattan Kansas Posts: 242 | definitely a good place to start | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | Similar Threads | Thread | Thread Starter | Forum | Replies | Last Post | cheap mufflers? | tiFreak | Exhausts | 36 | 09-26-2009 10:44 PM | Universal Mufflers | NoahChamberlain | Exhausts | 15 | 02-09-2005 07:40 PM | Mufflers | 2ndBimmer | Exhausts | 2 | 08-13-2004 02:05 AM | |
