Hello there, I'm new to this forum, so my apologies if this question has already been asked, however I can't find it in any of the threads that I've searched through. I've recently (as in last week) bought a 318ti which was (how can I put it kindly...) in less than perfect condition, and over the course of the week, I've serviced it and got it back up and running with all the bits (courtesy of the local BMW scrappie) that I needed to repair her, however I'm one part short and I'm not 100% where/how to get this on its own, so I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on where to get the rubber part that fits between indicator and wing, as at the moment (although it's fitted solid) I have a rattly indicator, and I don't want any of that nasty wet stuff getting in there if I can help it!! I was thinking that maybe a rubber tube would block the gap until I could get a more permanent solution, but I'm not one for bodging a job when I can do it properly first time around to save me coming back to it!! The car had been in a smash, and it's not been very well repaired imo, which is how I got it on the cheapy, but I'm slowly working it back towards life in the fast lane and I have to admit, damn it's good Just in case specs are needed, it's a '97 Jap import (in New Zealand) a pure Ti (no obvious mods) with the clear indicators. Thanks for any help, Dan | | | 02-18-2009, 10:07 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I checked realoem, and it looks like that isn't a piece that you can buy separately new, you'd need to buy the whole signal or get it off a junk car | | | 02-18-2009, 10:51 PM | #3 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | If it's rattling, there's a good chance that the tabs may be broken, either on the headlight housing or possibly the clip on the corner indicator. It may be fine and only need the rubber/foam gasket, but I'd check first to make sure. Congrats on your new purchase and welcome to the forum! | | | 02-19-2009, 06:59 AM | #4 | Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Wellington-New Zealand Posts: 78 | From one Kiwi to another. Have you tried Trade Me. They have heaps of second hand parts. Good luck. | | | 02-19-2009, 11:21 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2009 Location: New Zealand Posts: 5 | Thanks for all the replies, Cooljess76: it appears to be solid enough, just a matter of it moves if you push it, and of course there's like a 5mm (ish) gap between indicator and wing, so it's just one of those annoying little things that everyone will notice (after they notice the bodged and very iffy paint job someone did on the bumper... next stop, spray shop but I need a new job first!!) so I want to fix it for completeness of the car... I've never owned anything this nice before, so I want it to look good as well as feel good to drive! Eshtebah: I will try trademe... considering I found the car on there, I should have thought about that for parts, but for some strange reason my brain cells didn't quite make the connection! tiFreak: thanks for checking, I'll be sure to use that realoem thing myself now I know of its existance! I've found a scrappie that's really rather useful, I don't know if I'm allowed to post their name here, so I won't just yet unless people ask (kiwi's in particular as that's where I am atm) Tomorrow morning it's going in for an alarm fit out for that all important insurance discount, and of course I'm still looking for a new job, so that's about the last thing I can realisitically do before I get a new job... tbh, only bought the car to get me to/fro the city for interviews and whatnot, as the one I've been borrowing is no longer available, and I figured it's about time I treated myself to a nice car, after my long list of previous automotive transport devices! (my garage has consisted of: a Mini City, Fiat Uno, Peugeot 309, Citroen AX, Nissan Micra, Vauxhall/GM/Holden/Opel (whatever you wanna call them) Astra, Vectra, Honda Prelude, Fiat Punto, and now finally the BMW 318!) Anyway... enough of my ramblings... off to trademe! & thanks for the welcome good to find a forum that can help! In US English (according to a site I found) it's the actual front right "turn signal" rubber strip (that fits between the indicator and the wing) that I'm looking for, but thank you kindly for the offer Dan | | | 02-20-2009, 07:40 PM | #8 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Dan, it may help to know that the 318ti shares the same indicators as the e36 saloon(sedan/4dr) models. The e36 coupe/convertible models will not fit as they're different fitment. Your best bet is to visit a wrecking yard or try to find a set on ebay or that trademe site. Best of luck to you! -Jesse | | | 02-20-2009, 07:54 PM | #9 | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2009 Location: New Zealand Posts: 5 | Hi Jesse, Thanks for the tip, I've found a guy on Trademe who I need to call today about the rubbers, however when I went to the scrappie (Wrecking yard/Junk Yard/place where cars go to die to translate myself) they wanted NZ$ 65 +gst for the indicators and won't sell the rubbers on their own! The guy on trademe is claiming that he has a set of the rubbers though, and he scraps bmw 3's so hopefully I'm in luck... otherwise, I give up! I'll go down to the plumber supply shop and buy a rubber tube that will fit the gap, because I can get a similar look to standard by cutting it in half and using bonder to attach it to the indicator... at least this should make it water tight until I can get a more permanent solution!! Incidently, for anyone in NZ looking for spare parts, from my experiences so far, these are the guys to see (if I'm allowed to plug... if not, sorry moderator people): http://www.europart.co.nz they say they specialise in BMW, Alfa and Mercedes... but I only saw BMW parts there when I was there, which suits me just fine There website isn't up to much, but I popped in to see them and I got everything I needed sorted apart from that rubber strip, so can't complain... and it was all for NZ$250 as well, which got me Factory mats (as someone had seen fit to remove the originals), centre caps for all wheels, a new glovebox door (someone had broken the locking mechanism on the old one), the drivers door floor trim, and spare bulbs (that's just me, I like to be prepared!)
