Default m42 to m44 swap

as stupid as this swap sounds i found a 318is for dirt cheap and have a extra motor in my 318ti. problem. 318is is 95 ti is 96.

what all would i need to change to make this work? i have everything from the ti still so sourcing parts at this point isnt a problem.

thanks in advance.

I will take a shot at this:

The 1995 is set up for in-between when they were going to OBD-II. You will need a OBD-II wiring harness. A 1996 DME, EWS and Key (DME ending in 677 I think) unless you are going to pull all these from the 1996 ti. If you plan to pull all parts from the ti then it is a easy swap and only need to pull all OBD-II tiems and install.

Best, John S

It depends. There are certain months that the 1996 was still half OBD I and half OBD II. Reason I say this is because when i looked at Bryan's ti a bit ago, in his 1996 ti he doesn't have a secondary air pump and some other little things. His ti was built in the early months of 1996.
So, in simple terms... look at your ti and see if you have the SAP and the normal accessories that the OBD II has. If not, then the exhaust manifold will be interchangeable sine you wouldn't have the hole for the SAP.
Hope that makes sense.

I thought that all new cars sold in the US beginning with the 1996 model year had to be OBD-II compliant. I know the actual requirement did not kick in until January 1, 1996, which theoretically means that 1996 model year cars built in late 1995 would not technically have needed to comply, but it seems odd to me that a manufacturer wouldn't just start the model year out in compliance with the 1996 regulation instead of changing it in the middle of a production year. Then again, I have seen some pretty strange things happen in the middle of automobile production years and BMW is no exception.

That said, would the air pump necessarily have anything to do with the OBD system? Could it have been a 49-state car or have been modified by a previous owner?

i believe bryan's car is a 4/96 or 5/96, not sure on the month of build. its been a while since we last checked out the build date on his ti. Its one of those cars that were the in between regulations. So back to your issue, check if you have the SAP in the ti because then the exhaust manifold from the 318is won't work if it has it.
