Default Check engine light came on today

I was wondering if I should just take it to a shop to get it checked or should I get a fault code reader. I was leaning more towards just getting a code reader, but not sure what kind to get, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

If your car is a '95, it's OBDI and you'll need an OBDI scantool OR you can check the codes by diong the "stomp" method(search the forums for "stomp" to get a better explanation). If your car is a '96 or newer, it's OBDII and you'll need an OBDII scantool. The port is located in the driver's legwell under the dash. It should have a black plastic cover with "OBD" embossed on it.

Just about any OBDII scantool will do the job. Some are just nicer than others. The cheaper scantools will only read/clear the numeric codes, while the nicer ones will give you a description as well as "Live Data" including AFR's, sensor readings etc. I use an Innova 3130 which cost about 140 bucks. I like it because it has a backlit display and gives live data, which comes in handy when troubleshooting at night. Another cool reader is called the ScangaugeII. It's designed to stay plugged in and gives you a variety of functions. I think it even gives you MPG info.
