Now, call me crazy, but isn't that how an M42 is already set up out of the factory?

I have a 95 active w/M42 and that pretty much looks like the setup from my stock airbox... just no extra hole on the side.

you might be crazy, but that is true. The M42 pulls air directly from the front of the box.. just like the six cylinder cars. I am pretty sure that is one of the reasons the m42 and the m44 make such similar HP numbers even though the M44 is the bigger engine.

If you go by Fogg's observations from the computer.. the fogged box puts 8% more air into the engine.. if you assume the engine is still making 138hp.. that means the engine is now putting out about 150hp.

The 323 only did 168hp.. so I can only assume that 150hp was too close to the larger six cylinder engine for BMW's liking.. so they choked it down and robbed it of most of it's high end power.

Honestly, I would not use the part from the M44. I would go out and get the part for the Six Cylinder cars (I have one on order from Pelican) instead. The opening is larger with a nice big diameter tube that leads to the airbox.
Does that follow the same path as the M44 intake? What's the part number?

It doesn't follow the M44 intake.. it follows the path the M42 and six cylinder cars take.. only the M44 has such a convoluted intake

Thanks. I checked realoem and saw that. It's similar enough to the M42 that it's probably not worth me switching.

I will say this though. After fixing a vacuume leak (I had accidently loosened that strange hose that goes to the injectors) My car is VERY responsive now. The previous mid-range loss of power that leads to a flat top end is compleatly gone. I have slammed into the revlimiter several times today alone, the car pulls that well now.

I can only assume that BMW intentionally restricted the M44 to keep the HP numbers down low as not to compete with the 168hp the 323 has.
Any updates on your order with Pelican? How did it fit with the ti airbox? I am ready to do this mod but if the 6 cylinder part seems better then I will purchase that instead of the Lowes special. Actually I checked Ace Hardware 2 miles from my house and they have both parts readily available.

Does this sound like the same part you ordered, from realoem.com:

diagram # Item QTY Part # Price
11 SUCTION TUBE 1 13711730756 $27.62

Also, what bit(s) did you use for the Dremel tool and what did you use to make the hole as round as it is. I know myself and if/when I do this it will come out looking like a deformed egg if I don't have a template of some sort.

I like this idea.
It has everything I look for in a mod.
Neat & clean.
Can almost pass for stock.
Less than $10
One hour or less.
Made from rain gutter parts. (a bonus)

Plus, Mad-Machine had enough spare time to hand-paint birds on the workbench!

Great mod! I'm ripping my gutters apart this weekend!
