Default car won't come out of park

I just replaced my starter on my 1998 bmw 318ti. I had trouble with it starting and had to really play with it to get the new starter to work. I finally got the old one off and put the new one in. Now it starts and runs like a champ, but now it won't go into gear. I can depress the brake and it releases the shifter, but there is too much tension and the car won't go into gear. I jacked it up and it appears the shift lever on the tranny is not moving. I need help! I don't know if it's actually the tranny, or some sensor I unplugged by accident while weaving my hand through to the starter bolts. I did not have any problems with my tranny before this. The car has sat for about a month without driving, since I was busy with the holidays. Any help would be appreciated! If anyone knows what's going on, please let me know!

ok. got a lot of views but no help. I think I figured it out. I disconnected my shift cable and the tranny would go into gear, then disconnected it from the shifter and it would move, so it has to be the shift cable. Has anyone ever changed one of these? Are there any tips I need to know?

Alright. No help from the forum, but I got it fixed. I had to replace the shift cable. Oh, and by the way, if anyone ever does this, the book is wrong! The cable has to come up from the top, not down through the bottom. Just FYI.
