Default M50 turbo Ti

The car

318ti sport individual
old motor- supercharged M44 (DASC)
most e36 mods done.. springs&struts, xbrace, sway bars, exhaust, ect.

Already have the non vanos m50b25 in the mail! so excited for my little car to start its new life.

been doing some research, its a 200k+ mile motor so I am going to redo the head gasket and head bolts. I've found these so far

I believe I am in the right direction with the .140 mls HG and the headbolts, if anyone knows where to get a better deal or a better seller I can buy from I would appreciate it.

Swapping the M50 into it n/a, plan on no PS no AC, then turbo it once I acquire the parts. So I am getting the HG and bolts out og the way before I put the motor in the car. My friend also suggested I clean the valves and maybe even port the head while it's off. Opinions anyone?

Also. What stand alone ECUs do you run? or do you guys just tune the OBD1 ecu? I was looking at this.

http://www.vi-pec.com/ecus/v44

but I don't want to spend $2k on a standalone.. apparently there's a vi-pec made specifically for the m50b25

looking at a new water pump too. a 200k+ motor will probably need it. should I plan on it and order it anyways? or wait and see what the quality of the motor is

Do the water pump and t-stat plus any hoses that are brittle. I would try to stick with a BMW DME that has been coded for you application. Contact Barrie @ Midnight Tuning to see what he has for a turbo M50.

I'm very interested in how this works out since I always wanted to turbo a I-6

Best of luck, John Smith

Someone else told me a metal thermostat housing, looking for one of those right now. I'm going to put the m50 in it n/a and run it like that while I get the turbo parts together.. Looking at getting a precision 6266 and top mount headers

motor will be here the 7th. Ordered the head gasket, head bolts, water pump, thermostat and a metal thermostat housing. Looking forward to bringing the old motor back to life. Also got good news, the supplier is giving me the wiring harness that came on the 525i the motor is coming off, and he's also looking for an ECU. 402 or 403 red label.

How hard is it going to be to do the timing and head bolts on the M50B25? Last time I did timing it was on a 1.8 Miata and it didn't go to well

Ok, motor is here. all the parts are here, but they didn't send the wiring harness with the motor, like they said they would... Looks like I'm in the market for an M50 wiring harness for an E36. Will the automatic trans harness work? also would the vanos harness work? I can't seem to find a non-vanos harness.

Rather than wait for a response, I bought the Automatic harness for an E36 325i. Seems like I will have to wire the reverse lights in and thats it. 402 ECU On the way also.

You can buy the timing tools on ebay for around $100. There are many DIYs that go into depth on how to time the engine. See beisan systems or dr.vanos instructions. Best of luck with the swap.

The motor is in, aside from 3 bellhousing bolts I need to lower the tranny to get too. and the wiring. should be smooth sailing from here hopefully.

update, car runs great. had a crank/no start issue. ended up being the EWS on the ecu even though every where I read said there wasn't EWS on the 403 ecu. Pulls good, not as good as the previous DASC but right up there with it. Done a few mods including e46 LCAs and some other goodies. Planning on starting buying the parts for turbo soon
