Default Project 319ti

So, barring some miracle where I either win the lottery or have a m3 donor car appear in my driveway with a sticky note on it that says "for zboot with love", I'm going to be swapping my bad m44 with a good m44.

I plan on following the bentley manual for this though with an engine removal, it says to remove the tranny first (from below). Is this any better or less difficult than removing the engine+tranny then disconnecting afterwards, coupling the new engine to the tranny and putting it back?

I'm pissed though. I missed out on picking up a m3 donor car from a guy on bimmerfest.com for $1500. Even after shipping it up here, it would still have been a steal!

M44s are 1.9l, not a mistake.

Thumbs up

I can't answer your question about the transmission, but I would love it if you posted up some updates/pictures or anything here. I'm planning on doing this very thing maybe a year down the road when I have some more cash. Good luck man!

PS: Have you looked into anything Metric Mechanic has to offer? They have some pretty sick builds for the M44, along with individual parts upgrades (pistons, rods, valves, etc.). I'm definitely going to look into it when the time comes.

318ti stands for
3= 3 series
18= 1.8 L engine
ti= ti

It should be a 319ti but i guess bmw didn't feel like changing the emblem.

There are plenty of BMWs in which the name doesn't match the liters of the engine

actually I think it was so the 320 wouldn't have competition, but then again I'm not sure if they made an E36 320, I guess you're right Dave, of course, the 323 does have a 2.5L engine so who knows? crazy Germans

lol, my buddy was asking me questions about engines and swaps and then said something like is there a 325? So, I explained to him that the m42 in the original 318 was a 1.8 ltr, my car should be a 319, the 323 would be a 3 series 2.3ltr and so forth.

And I decided to start referring to my car as a 319ti

Do it with the tranny(if you have a good engine crane), I did it yestaday. THIS IS WHAT I DID put the front of the car on jack stands(High as they could go) I took off the whole intake first and wires. Mark all wires with tape took off the plug wires and coil. Off came the alernator , so I could take off the steering pump. I didnt want to disconnect it! Disconnect the A/C radiator comes out with hoses. there is a ground next to the engine mount on passenger side. took nuts off engine mounts. Tough part might be for you is the exhaust, I would heat it up with a tourch. I think those nuts are 13mm? going to need a wobble extention.. tranny crossmember(support it with a jack) heat shield covering drive shaft, flexdisc bolts. 18mm i think not sure. Loosened the slip yoke. the driveshaft didnt come out not untill i pulled the engine up a little. 2 clips holding the shifter... unclipped reverse lights switch.. clutch slave.. ?? I think thats it!

and the new

If you don't have access to a leveler, you'll need to pull the trans first or take the front end of the car off.

I've mated and de-mated the engine trans several times, its not terrible. I'd rather do that than have to realign the whole front end over and over. Its better to scratch the trans housing than the bumper I always say.
